Tangerine says my cheque is "stale-dated?"

Hello,

I tried cashing in my cheque using Tangerine's mobile app. But they sent me an email saying the cheque is refused because it is "stale-dated." From what i've read, that means the cheque has been dated more than 6 months ago. But the date on the front of the cheque reads "April 20th, 2019." But my employer crossed out the 20 and wrote 18 instead.

Is this an error on Tangerine's part?

It's probably due to the employer changing the date. 'Stale dated" might just be a catch all for cheques that can't be cashed for various reasons

Hmmm... I guess I should try cashing it at a different bank in person?

You can't make changes to a cheque. If it was an individual, you might be able to get away with initialing the change, as a business I would assume you need to get another cheque made up. I'm just guessing, I don't work for a bank lol.

Probably imaging error in the software, recognizing it as a year. Try again, if it doesn't work, deposit at a Scotia ATM.

I think you're probably right. I didn't think about the imaging software. I think i'll try in person... First time I ever heard of this stale-dated thing.

If it was charged back by the FI that it's drawn on, depositing it again can get it charged back as duplicate. Getting a replacement cheque from your employer would be the best bet to avoid any hassle - or if they can confirm if it cleared their account before returning, that should let you know if a replacement is needed.

Did they change to April 18, 2019 or April 20, 1819? I am assuming April. 18, 2019. haha.
