Tax Time - Children Fitness Receipt

My child was registered for an eligible activity. It started in November 2015 and ended March 2016. We were billed on Dec 12 2015 and we started paying monthly in January 2016 and will continue to pay until June 2016.

I have called to ask for a tax receipt and I was told that because I started paying in January only I will be able to deduct it in 2017 when I will be doing my 2016 taxes.

Is this right? Or I should go by the date on the bill and claim this credit right away?

Thank you.

I would use the "billed" date as my justification for you to include it in your 2015 tax return (i.e. right now).

I'm not sure how much you paid, but if it's close to the $1,000 limit, then you'll benefit from doing so sooner than later.

For the 2016 tax year, the fitness credit is going to be cut in half to a $500 limit, and then $0 the year after that.

Also, if you file electronically, you don't need to provide this receipt (only provide if audited), so it should be a non-issue as long as the gov't doesn't have their eye on you.

Taxes are reported on the cash basis, that means when the payment is made.

Having said that, a self assessment tax system means you can do what you like. It only depends if cra asks about it later.

According to this letter from an MP, to claim the 2016 fitness credit, payment must be made before July 1, 2016! I can't find this info anywhere else. Can anyone confirm???

I think this MP is just mistaken. It is cut in half for 2016 and eliminated in 2017. Ending it part way through the year would hardly make sense.
