Television purchase question - 65 Inch

Hi everyone,
I have been doing some research into getting a new TV (my old Vizio conked out earlier this year - 55 inch) and I am just wondering what people can recommend with 65 inch range. From my research it seems to indicate that OLED is certainly the top class but certainly the price range is certainly quite expensive (Sony one I saw was around $3000). I was wondering if the extra for OLED is worth it. I was looking at paying somewhere in the vicinity of $2000+Tax.

Does anyone have any suggestions with what I should look for?

OLED TVs are fantastic. Simply can’t be beat if you want the best image quality. LGs OLEDs are cheaper than Sony’s and can usually be found on sale.

Personally I would save a bit more and get the OLED. Colours is so vibrant.

I don't own an OLED, but they're absolutely beautiful. I'm in the market for a new screen for my basement remodel. I wanted to go OLED, but I wouldn't buy anything less than a 77" and that puts me in the $5000 range.

My budget can exceed that, but in that price range, I'm strongly considering an ultra short throw projector. 100" screen would be a dream.

But I'm off topic lol. If you really like the idea of an OLED, you can snag a 65" Sony for $2499 at Best Buy

Here is the Rtings Review.

OP, would be good for you to be aware of image burn-in potential with OLED. The manufacturers play it down, but it can occur. https://www.cnet.com/how-to/oled-screen ... w-in-2021/
Basil: Well, may I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically -?

That's good to know. I'm definitely tempted. I do enjoy having a great tv so it might be worth splurging to do that. Thanks for that.

I just got a new 65" LG C1 OLED, $2800 net from Costco (after promo $200 credit) and 2yr warranty, replacing my old Panasonic plasma. I remember people made an overblown fuss about the potential for burn-in on plasma back when we got the Panasonic, but it was never a problem, and it sounds like OLED is similar - fine as long as you don't do something stupid like leaving a fixed display on the screen at high brightness for weeks. I've seen LCDs burned in by doing that (yes, LCDs can get burn-in).

Based on past experience, I wouldn't consider Sony - product reliability is just not their priority. I banned them permanently from our house after one too many fails. Others may have a different experience, but consumer surveys of brand reliability bear out my opinion. In any case, LG is the master of OLED, and they make the OLED screens for Sony. Why buy from a secondary company that puts unreliable electronics around a screen they bought from someone else, and then marks the price up?

I think the newest Samsung QLEDs also have a magnificent picture, and they can go brighter than OLED and have better screen anti-reflective coating for a bright room. But they can't quite match the zero black level or wide viewing angle of OLED, and they're just as expensive.

Don't judge a picture too much by "vibrant" colour you see in a store. Colour is supposed to be natural, not vibrant. Stores tend to turn the contrast and brightness way up so that the TV picture will "pop" in the store.

One concern with LG (and probably most of the others) now is that their wide-ranging harvesting of personal information. If you leave the TV connected to the internet, it's going to be reporting everything you watch to LG, who have unrestricted rights to sell it to advertisers. They even run content recognition algorithms to identify unlabeled content you watch. And a lot of manufacturers are already trying to slip their own advertising into what you watch.

the overall image quality of OLED vs modern FALD manufactured after 2020 is also overhyped at this point and it isn't inherently better in every single context the way it was maybe 3-4 years ago. OLED may still be better in specific context like dark black scenes and images but FALD can be better in others ie bright colorful detailed scenes, HDR/DV content, and overall brightness with no risk of burn in from gaming. It's no longer worth the $1000+ difference in a 65" imo and it's just a matter of time before the price gap between the two start to close with either FALD getting more expensive or OLED getting cheaper

LG Nanocell 4K 65" UHD HDR $1,299

55" - 749

Both at Best Buy today - I've always been an LG fan, and the interface and user experience just works. It's Web OS, which means no Android, Roku, etc junk on it.

Thanks I'll take a look at them. I was thinking of either LG or Sony.

I admit I am not sure if the quality is worth the extra price but I'll keep looking. Thanks for the advice.

Hmm, so I shouldn't bother going from a 2018 TCL 6 series to a LG C8?

not necessarily, 2018 is old enough that the difference would've been much greater back then and the gap only really started to close in the past year. All I'm saying is if you're looking at 2020/2021 models, look at FALD because the image quality is closer than most people will notice and even better in certain context for less money.

You hold onto that thing until someone pries it from your cold hands!

I regret to this day selling my Kuro.

Hmm, they perform very close, but where can I find a Hisense U8G in Canada? Visions?

Is it a big enough upgrade? I mostly want it for VRR gaming.

If one is using the TV in a dark environment, OLED is the one to go with. FALD sucks due to blooming which is super noticeable in dark scenes. Only thing good about LCD is that they are brighter and more suitable in bright rooms.

I'd go for a 80J 85 or 90J LED Sony just for the ATSC 3.0 tuner built in... but waiting for a sale. Don't know if that should be my sole reason for upgrading a TV... and OLED are too expensive for my wallet right now. Hopefully their price goes much lower in the future.

I find their "sale prices" to be misleading since the sale price is the same as Sony's MAP price on their site.

I bought a 65" about year and a half ago. I bought the one with all bells and whistles. Sales person did a good job selling them to me.

I literally realized on Day 2. I don't need any of the features. the one I really wanted to get was "full array" (comparable to get perfect dark on oled). Mine has some zones. I don't even remember to notice pitch black is not pitch black, until I remember I don't have it lol ... and even that is noticeable in night usually, not in day.

I got built-in Android. I think that is probably the best feature. No cables, no extra remotes! If I were to buy again, I buy the medium quality with least features. Replace in couple years and still save money buying a high end right up front. Just an opinion.
