are there any consequences for using credit card insurance for rental car?

i have no car or car insurance of my own, but my credit card offers car insurance with a $500 deductible.

i incurred a windshield star chip while driving and may need to use the credit card insurance if the rental agency finds the chip (i used a repair kit but there is still a hairline crack in the line of sight).

if i use the credit card's insurance, will my credit score go down, or will my insurance premiums be higher if i were to ever buy a car?

Only issue is if your credit card caps the payout. There was a thread on here sometime ago about a person renting an SUV. The credit card limited the payout to a maximum of $65,000 and the renter thought that was good. Rental agency upgraded them to a $69,000 vehicle (or a little more) and they were on the hook for the difference over $65,000 when the vehicle was totaled. Just make sure that your credit card insurance covers the cost of the car just in case.

Also make sure that vehicle is covered by your CC insurance. They cover generic vehicles, they might not cover certain vehicles or class of vehicles like pick up trucks.

You don't want to be driving around in a vehicle that isn't even covered by your CC and now you're on the hook for the all of the damage and liabilities.

Also be sure you understand exactly WHAT insurance that CC offers for the rented vehicle - it varies substantially amongst Credit Cards and could be as little as loss-of-use coverage.

To answer your question though OP, no, there is no consequence to using the insurance that comes with your credit card. It doesn't affect your credit score or anything else.

Hello, I will be using tangerine world MasterCard which covers 650000. I am planning to rental full size suv 7 passenger which shows up as Dodge Durango on Avis site but rental counter would not tell me the msrp. When I search 2020 Dodge Durango msrp the awd model shows up 56000 but next model up shows 76000 so little confused. MasterCard CSR indicates that they would not cover > $65000 msrp at all ie it is not even up to $65000 which sound like there is $10000 damage they would not cover it because teh msrp is above $65000

Careful. You're not guaranteed a Durango, and if you end up with an Armada...well: need-help-2-13-update-damage-rental-car ... o-2255768/

That's correct. If the vehicle price is over $65,000 then you are not covered.

One option is to call the Avis location where you will be picking up the vehicle and ask what trim level you will be receiving. You can then do a search and see what the MSRP is for that trim level.

Another option though is to simply select a lower priced vehicle.

Avis won't be able to answer that. He'll get the example vehicle "or similar" that he reserved. The local agency will have no idea what specific vehicle or even trim level will be available on the day he picks it up.

@runeash and @ausername Do you have an American Express card? Amex's CDW goes up to $85k. Now is a good time to grab the Simply Cash Preferred card, welcome bonus is 10% back on everything you buy in your first 4 months (max $400). $99 annual fee.
Amex Marriott Bonvoy is another good one, $120/year but includes a free night at a Marriott hotel every year so pays for itself. Welcome bonus us 50k Marriott points.

You should have disclosed the windshield chip instead of trying to hide it by fixing it yourself.

No it won’t impact either. What’s happens sometimes though depending on the rental agency and credit card company is the full cost of the repair, downtime, administration can be charged to your card. You’re expected to pay this and your CC’s insurer will credit you after they close the file. So that chip might cost you a $1,000 glass replacement and a week of downtime ($700, rental are pricy right now). Which you would have to pay and you’ll get reimbursed later.

So they ended up giving me 2021 suburban LT and I didn’t take CDW realizing now should have although nothing has happened (crossing fingers) after what happened in other thread ( it is not upto $65000) which they mentioned around 67000 so thinking of heading to nearest Avis location to add CDW in the morning or head back to original location at the CGY airport (1 hr away) to see if they would give me something under $65000. Since i am 1 day into my 5 day rental heading to banff/jasper might my worth just adding cdw $31/day for rest of the trip hopefully the banff location would not give me hard time with inspection as the they gave me unwashed car with two scratches which they had pre marker and was seeing some other ones and could not tell if they minor scratches or just dirt as they gave me I un washed but the guy at checkout garage said it is fine. What do you guys think? Other may be add ospf21 or stick with adding CDW which may have it own evils that I am not aware of.

All I know is many years ago I scraped against a pole while backing up in a rental car in Hawaii. My RBC Avion card took care of everything for me.

And that is what I am hoping incase I run into small issues like that but that $65000 msrp sound like it is all or nothing. Hoping CC companies considers small things inspite of being above msrp
