So you want to buy a hard drive only to open it and afterward want to return it for a full refund? Either way you wouldn't get a full refund or at least I doubt it but have you ever heard the term " Open Box Product "? Newegg for one at least I know that will

Sounds like someone wants to "rent" a hard drive for a few days.

Definitely sounds like someone who needs a HD to make a backup perhaps while transferring data to a new computer or HD, or for data recovery.

Don't be a Richard.

Buy the new drive and keep it as a backup device.

Or buy used as has already been suggested and resell when you're done

Sounds like a complete douche move.

Probably wouldn't be an issue with Costco though...

Buy a computer from a store that accepts returns. Open the computer, get the hard disk out, use the hard disk, put back the hard disk in the computer and return the computer. Btw, unless you carefully wipe the disk, your data can be recovered by people with proper knowledge/tools. Every time I buy a used computer that's the first thing I do, try to recover data from the disk. The cops, among others, have wonderful software to recover what was once written on a disk ;) Though you might not be able/allowed to buy such software.
