A 20-year-old Toronto woman is facing charges after she allegedly locked her dog in a hot car for hours before it was rescued by police.

York Regional Police said they responded to a call from a concerned citizen regarding a dog in distress in the Vaughan Mills parking lot on June 30.

Police said the dog was lethargic and panting heavily when officers arrived.

The dog was rescued through a hole in the sun roof and was treated to air conditioning and water, police said.

After reviewing security footage, investigators determined the dog had been left in the car for almost three hours in 29 C heat.

The owner was charged with Cause Animal to be in Distress under the Provincial Animal Welfare Services (PAWS) Act.

The dog was returned to the owner as it had recovered after drinking some water and spending time in an air conditioned cruiser. Police say if the dog was still distressed, they would have sent it to a veterinarian.

Police are reminding pet owners to never leave their pets unattended in a vehicle.

WOULD SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!

So the owner got a slap on the wrist and the dog back? Should have at least had to pay for a new window that was smashed out to rescue the dog...

She got lucky that someone noticed and called police. I think the dog should have still gone to the vet ER for a check up with PAWS officers at the owner’s expense, who knows what damage could have been done internally.

Was it a Tesla?
I have a Tesla and sometimes park by the chargers but not with my dog inside while I shop... you can leave the AC on in a Tesla while away from the car. I'm too afraid the general public wouldn't know this and smash my windows :/

Why was the dog returned to the owner??
Who goes shopping for 4 hours??

Edit*
Notice there was a sunroof, so not a Tesla

I 100% agree with Didi_beee - the dog should not have been returned to the owner. That is the trouble with our laws and the fact that dogs and cats are classified as chattels. I saw the newscast and that pup would have been rehomed in a second. I expect that there are many complaints against returning the pup to the owner.
