Just checked my rating which is 4.73, which I guess is good?
Yes, it is good as it is over 90%.

I generally give most drivers 5 and I suspect most of them give me 5. The only time two drivers gave me less than 5 was in Las Vegas when I hailed a Lyft/Uber inside an indoor casino/hotel drop off at the end of a convention and the Lyfts/Ubers were bumper to bumper in the indoor parking and my app told me that the driver arrived but I couldn't see him and he didn't try contacting me via the app... and I suspect that he was waiting for the timer to finish so that he could charge me the "no show" fee and leave but he didn't even make it to the actual pick up or drop off location and was just at the entrance of the indoor parking garage when he signaled that he arrived. I called/contacted the driver in the app when I noticed that the timer was close to expiring and asked him where he was since I was at the pickup/dropoff location and didn't see his car and told him to turn his headlights on/off which he did and then I found him and got in. The other time I got into an Uber/Lyft and activated the GPS on my phone to make sure I wasn't long hauled and he noticed that I was doing this.

The on-going debate and fighting back against this obscene tipping culture:

CTV: We asked Canadians where and when tipping feels out of place. Here’s what they told us
Some Canadians are all tipped out.

That’s the sentiment brewing as consumers navigate high inflation, tariffs and now digital tip screens popping up in more places than ever before.

When Vancouver resident Ali Zvjerac was prompted to tip while paying the cover charge to enter a nightclub – he paused. This wasn’t for drinks or coat check. It was just to walk through the door.

This is one of many experiences submitted by Canadians responding to CTVNews.ca’s recent callout asking where they’ve encountered unexpected tipping requests – and the answers show the line between service and surcharge blurring in real time.

From self-checkouts and retail counters to cosmetic shops and paint nights, Canadians say they’re increasingly being asked for gratuities in places that traditionally never called for one – the latest tip-related irritant known as a “tip creep.”

A recent survey by H&R Block found that 90 per cent of Canadians believe tips are too high and 82 per cent say they’re being asked to tip in more places than ever. Almost one in four surveyed say they have been asked to tip “in places or situations that felt uncomfortable or unexpected.”

Ordered online (clothing) and was asked for a tip 'to show support for the crew'. Fool, that's YOUR job as an employer, it's called a good wage!! Just unbelievable!!

I feel no shame selecting ZERO tip. Being asked to tip at a mall food court stall is laughable. Why would I tip the guy cooking my food? Is he gonna serve me ordered cooked food raw? His/her job is to cook my food.

I have seen this in connivence stores too! I am bringing what I want to the counter and paying (by debit) for it. You want a tip for handling me the debit card machine?

On a side note, perhaps a fast casual restaurant has figured it out.... You ordered your food and paid for it at the counter. If you add a tip, they will tell you to sit down and bring the food to you. If you don't, they give you one of those blipping devices. Once it starts blipping, you go back to the counter and pick up the food yourself.

I never tip Uber , they are paid to do exactly what I pay them to do. Take me from Point A to Point B.

Same for Taxi, very clear system get me from Point A to Point B, I pay the metered rate.

For both case, why I need to pay extra for them to do the exact thing I pay them to do?

In many countries you only pay what's on the meter. At most, you round up to the next value and that is their tip.

Not disagreeing with you but using that logic, no one would be getting a tip.
- the waiter/waitress/server is paid to bring my food from the kitchen counter to my table
- the barber is paid to cut my hair
- housekeeping in hotels are paid to clean my room
- the bartender is paid to give me my drink
- etc.

Correct.

Server, tip is earned by provide good service.
It is optional.

Not like today model, expect to have min of 15% on the AFTER tax amount.

I was at the Jays game yesterday and bought popcorn for $10.

Terminal asked me what % I wanted to tip...

For someone to pass me a bag of massively overpriced popcorn I shouldn't have bought....

And zero wasn't an option, I had to 'custom amount' and put in 0.

The same argument could be made for Uber/Lyft which is to provide good service (i.e. no sudden braking or crazy accelerations, etc.)

I agree with you that tips are optional but in today's society for certain jobs, many people expect it and/or expect an automatic 15% even when they didn't do that great of a job.

I've been "questioned" (to put it mildly) by servers when I tipped under 15% (or even t under 10%). In the province of Quebec, tips are automatically assumed as being ~8%. What this means is a server who normally gets tips as part of their job is assumed to have a tip of 8% when it comes to having to pay income tax on it. Not tipping or tipping under ~8% would mean that the server is paying income tax on an amount that he/she didn't receive which is why some servers will get upset by no tip or low tip.

This is why we SHOULDN'T have tip.
Price it as it is. What you see is what you pay.

That will only slightly offset other tips they make above 8% that they don't report on their taxes.

It should be no tips. Period.

Only douche that want society to tip are those who work in jobs that receive tips. Nah man... if you want more pay, ask your employer for it. The employer can then adjust their prices/fees as necessary.

When I had contractors work on my house redoing my driveway or patio or roof or windows or reno, I don't tip them. Sure I show my appreciation by buying them drinks & lunch, but I certainly don't tip even though they are working harder and 10hr days. Why? Because they charge me accordingly to the job so they get paid well. I don't tip my mechanic either. All these guys work harder and take pride in their work, but they also charge accordingly.

If those in the hospitality industry want better pay, then they should demand it and stop expecting the consumer to pick up the tab. Heck, half of them don't even try to go above & beyond anyways. They just expect it.

History…
Again goes back to the transition between Slavery & Servitude … to a paid wage

Carriage drivers typically were tipped for good service …
Meaning they not only got you to and from safely …
Without a whole lot of bumps & jostling

But opened doors
Carried parcels
And provided an umbrella too

That’s the ART OF THE JOB that’s now lost

Ya don’t do much extra for me … don’t expect much extra from me

That's the thing, I did tip 20% at a restaurant because the services was excellent . Really above and beyond.

That's the thing, it is earned. If taxi driver at airport help me load the luggage, i do tip, but not because you just take me from point A to point B.
Not at coffee shop hand me a coffee in paper cup.
Not at sandwiches shop hand me a sandwich in paper bag.
Not for online shopping to pack and ship me my package.
Not at self checkout that i take the soft drink, scan at the machine, and the screen ask me do I want to leave 15% tip?

djdestroyer wrote: Have you ever been to Japan? High-end restaurants most definitely expect a tip. I found it was 50/50 outside of high-end restaurants (taxi drivers, bell hops, lower-end restaurants, etc.) on whether or not they accepted tips.
Been there like 5 times in the last 2 years and ate the nicest food there is to offer. With in-laws dining at nice hotels and never had to tip once. And their service is at least two times better than it is in Canada. Not to mention, they earn less there too. So if there's anywhere to tip, it would be there. But most places will not accept tip as it can be seen as degrading.
Sorry I have none
