What is good service that warrants a tip? If I go through a servers job responsibilities, what are they doing that would be above their job description?cheapshopper wrote: ↑ Correct.
Server, tip is earned by provide good service.
It is optional.
Not like today model, expect to have min of 15% on the AFTER tax amount.

Jumping in late here.
To me tipping was due to the fact that servers min wage used to be far less than a standard employee's min wage.
However they now have the same wage. So if we are tipping for service, it should be across the board now. Tip our grocery store cashier, tip the person helping us at Rona to find something or load our cars. Overall I think tipping is ridiculous. I do not tip when I do pick up. I tip when I eat in, but its really to save face and not that I agree with it.

We can debate about whether these are part of "job description" but a few that come to mind that might merit "good service."Wrestlemania wrote: ↑ What is good service that warrants a tip? If I go through a servers job responsibilities, what are they doing that would be above their job description?
1. Ask about allergies and make sure the chef is aware of any you tell them you have.
2. Answer questions about menu items, e.g. ingredients, taste, spiciness, etc., perhaps share what's freshest or tastes best, etc.
3. Let you make modifications to a menu item to accommodate your taste or dietary needs.
4. Attentiveness to special needs, e.g. a high chair for a kid.
5. With groups making sure dishes arrive at the same time so everyone can start eating together.
6. General attitude, cheerfulness, etc. (as opposed to just an order taker.)

Sorry, are you referring to terminals in Canada or in Japan? While I was in Japan a few months ago, nowhere I went had terminals asking for tips like the ones here when paying. Like really none, and I ate out pretty much every day, at hotels, nice fancy restaurants in Shinjuku, Ginza. Perhaps I got lucky? I highly doubt it though
Sorry I have none

In Japan, tipping culture is basically “please don’t insult us,” while here in Canada your self-checkout machine wants a 20% gratuity for letting you do the work

I once dated a bartendress and her whole mood was based on how much money she made in tips the previous shift.. So um, moral of the story is tip these worker people demanding your money so they can avoid being miserable outside of work I guess?

Ok, no argument from me on this point. But …
Until we move to the next step …
A TRUE LIVING MINIMUM WAGE
Where it’s calculated on set location and true costs of living
I will continue to tip
Cuz the truth is …
No one can realistically live in most of Canada on the posted Minimum Wage
BUT, why do servers get special treatment on this point? What about retail workers (Walmart cashier), or self serve clerks (McDonald's), or any of a million other minimum wage jobs that don't get tips?
If you tip EVERY minimum wage worker you run across, that's fine, but if you only tip servers at sit-down restaurants, that's a huge inconsistency.

Some shops, e.g. a bakery, may prompt for tips when you pay for something that you're taking home. But if you pick up a custom-ordered cake at a grocery store at their counter, no one asks for a tip.
If you take a taxi, a tip is expected. But if you take a bus or train it isn't, not even if the driver or conductor helps you with boarding, etc. (And Uber is a grey area.)

I am so tired of Canadian tipping culture. Almost everywhere I go they ask for a tip or a donation now. It is totally out of control.
I am currently travelling in Europe (Portugal) and no one is asking for tips/donations. I go to a restaurant. The price on the menu is $20 and the final bill is also $20. The payment terminal does not even offer the option of adding a tip. What a delight.

Just curious what people tip for UE? I normally tip 10% but was looking at my order the other day and the Delivery Fee ($15) and BC Courier Fee + Service Fee (was 18% so $9) seem reasonable for compensation assuming the courier gets all of it and they get a flat hourly compensation in addition.

$15 + $9 = $24 just in fees for food delivery? On top of the food cost? Holy cow. I'm glad I don't use any food delivery services. What a rip!JWubbles wrote: ↑ Just curious what people tip for UE? "Gen-Z"(*) routinely order food via services like UE, higher menu prices, ridiculous delivery fees and tips on top of all that be damned.
Then they wonder why they can't afford the rent, let alone to buy a home.
Go figure...
(*) Yes, a stereotype for those of a certain mindset, not necessarily a certain age demographic. Nevertheless I don't know many boomers who use UE et al routinely.

Lots of sayings come to mind here :
Young & Foolish
A sucker born every minute
A fool and their money … are soon parted
Etc
Ok, so I’m a Boomer
I admit it
But I also will admit
That financial smarts and budgeting are important life skills
That these days … too few learn
Or understand far too late in life to fully appreciate
(BOTH definitions of appreciate being used here )
Sacrifices you make when you are young and able
Will serve you well into your old age !
Food Delivery Services are a ROYAL RIP
If the place doesn’t pay their own drivers
Then WHY should you carry that burden ?
We rarely order take out for delivery
And mostly just pizza or Chinese that has their own drivers traditionally
Otherwise …
We go out to eat … in person
Or do a pick up ourselves
$ 20 or $ 30 I save today …
Will feed me tomorrow !

I feel like I should note I have UberOne for free so delivery fee of $15 was waived to $0 and I had a 40% off promo. I also stack the Costco UberEats gift cards so it’s an additional 20% off. I’m good with grocery prices so I only order when I know net of fees and taxes I’m beating going in person.
But yeah, if I didn’t do that to make sure I had a deal it’s not worth it with all the egregious fees.

I sometimes think of how UberEats was originally thought up
I mean if you had asked a Boomer in our 20s to 40s
What we thought of getting take out delivered from anywhere
Sure …
We prob would have thought that was cool too
But if you told us it was going to cost as much as it does
(Basically the cost of throwing it into a Taxi )
We would have thought …
IT WAS A CRAZY IDEA *
I like convenience as much as the next guy
But I’m not willing to pay crazy money for it
If it’s something I’m quite capable of doing on my own for next to nothing
* Another CRAZY IDEA
Paying $ 5 or $ 10+ for a frickin coffee
Star*ucks must laugh all the way to the bank every day they exist
Customers doing this every workday
Are spending literally THOUSANDS on a damn cup of coffee annually
(average work year = 261 Days … DO THE MATH )
