[Today's Shopping Choice] Facebook Portal $59.99

Saw this on TSC, the new Facebook Portal with built in Alexa....not bad considering and Alexa with video is around $100 starting price.

Thanks OP, I realized I don’t have enough evil corporations invading my privacy. This should remedy that quite well.

The misinformation and psychological manipulation is just icing on the cake. Thinking for myself was getting pretty tiring!

Honest review as someone who doesn't have FB but has Whatsapp/Alexa

Pro
-Whatsapp call work wonderfully and does not req phone near by
-AI cam tracking work
-Sound on par w/ Echo 8
-Screen kinda on par w/ Echo 8
-Teams work
-Zoom work - still trying to figure out if I can login to the same meeting from another device for share screen.
-YT work in browser
-Alexa intergration work.
-Never tried goto but I would bet it work.

Con
-Deal breaker for me - no audio jack, seriously WTF
-Whatspp call does not req phone near by
-Portal is beyond stupid
-Amazon prime music/video mostly don't work
-Need paid Spotify for music/radio unless you use the browser
-Major distortion on camera
-UI looks like a school project back in 2012
-Alexa sound/functions like a knock off
-No Whatsapp msg integration, no whatsapp call switch between devices
-Might as well call it no app store

I got one last time around aiming as a PC speaker + teams/zoom device and it working as intended EXCEPT there is no audio jack and no mute button. I am considering getting a USB-C -> audio jack and see if it work.

It is a great deal for a 10" for Alexa intergration, PC speaker and some simple smart stuff. It would also be great if you do a lot of calls(whatsapp/zoom/teams) and don't care if everyone listening to your conversations. Mark Z/FB hate aside I would say good buy.

$250 is the "regular price" (MSRP)...
https://portal.facebook.com/ca/products/

Never mind what some vendor on amazon.ca is selling them for. I could buy them for $50 from TSC and list for $99 at amazon.ca .. that wouldn't make it the "regular price".

lol

Pay $60 or the supposed $250 to literally let Amazon and Facebook spy on you. Wow! What a deal!

Nice try, Zuck.

Is….is this a serious comment? That’s essentially Facebooks entire business model and why they’re so heavily criticized.

so they "spy on you" only for marketing/advertising purposes, which every company is trying to do but they won't admit it. They literally want to find out how to better target their ads on you, and better ads are scientifically proven to work, more profits for them! they're smart, it's all about everyone at the company getting more money, and it's all legal... sure, so an AI is spying on you and getting data, and then forgetting about it a few min later. they dont have enough harddrive space in the world to store everyones data, so they are not storing, they are just tracking ("spying"), better targeting ads for the users, and then disposing of that data right after (well after they turn your data into a statistic and add it to the pie chart). the facebook is spying on you is literally a meme at this point, like every (smart) company does this, c'mon

Genuine question. Why would anyone buy a hardware product from Meta when they are shown to outright deny people access to their own Quest hardware?
Initially, Meta promised that Quest hardware would be independent from their platform. People bought Quest hardware, then they required a Meta account to actually use it. Now, people are having their Meta accounts locked, making their Quest 2 hardware useless; with absolutely zero recourse.
As a developer, this has already happened to me. It was a nightmare to get access restored, and it only worked because I had access to a dev help email.

Great device for your aging parents who just need a working app for messenger and you can't be bothered to help them set it up on a PC, Laptop, or Phone because of tech illiteracy, poor eyesight, etc. This was great for my parents for them to call their grandkids easily. Besides that, garbage.

There’s so much of this that’s just simply untrue about the way Facebook specifically does this to address. The most glaring is that they definitely retain user data for way longer then you’ve written, and that they create shadow profiles of people not even using the service too through widgets on websites. They also don’t “spy” simply for ads, it’s also for engagement purposes through what’s presented in the feed too. You know, the major thing stoking division in many areas around the world currently? No other company behaves the way Facebook does when it comes to privacy or tracking.
