Toilet Flapper staying open / used plumbers putty to weigh it down
I had a running toilet so I replaced the flapper with a universal one (fluidmaster). All seemed fine and no leaks, but once in a while the flapper would 'stick' and stay in the open position even after letting go of the toilet handle (this isnt an issue with the chain/slack). For whatever reason, the bottom/side of the flapper would make contact with the side of the hole (tank to bowl hole?) and stay in the open position. See the picture below - I even cut the red tabs and it still would stay up from time to time.
I didnt have any stainless steel nuts or anything 'heavy' that would sink and weigh down the flapper, so I got some plumbers putty, made it into a ball and put it inside the bottom of the flapper (the ball is bigger than the opening of the bottom of the flapper so it shouldnt fall out). Per the picture below, I took off the translucent part of the bottom of the flapper put a large ball made of plumbers putty, and put the bottom part back on the flapper.
Seems like the extra weight did the trick and no more issues. But will this cause problems? Will the plumbers putty breakdown over time?
