Toronto Hydro - Fridge Pickup Free until Nov 30

Toronto folks -- If you missed the deadline last year when Toronto Hydro said the Free Fridge Pickup program was ending (and they were very definite about it, I had a big chest freezer picked up from my basement in the final month and most of the employees were already gone)... It apparently is back in action through the end of the month. If you have an OLD fridge/freezer and want to dispose of it, now is the time! They carry it up stairs and haul it away, no charge.

Old fridge? We lift, you save

We'll take away your old fridge or freezer and recycle it, free of charge. You can save up to $125 a year in energy costs!

Last chance! Schedule your free pickup by November 30, 2015.

This is amusing.
I had a freezer and a fridge that I thought I could dispose with the guy who helped the furnace guys to dispose the old furnace
The HVAC guy told me to put them next to the furnace. The guy who collected scrap metal did not take them, he did not want them
The freezer was OK ...I just put a label on it "It works, looking for a new home"-it disappeared in two three hours
The old fridge which was in the basement had the same fate, it was in working condition but I did not put any label on it thinking that nobody will be interested in that old model.

I have the feeling that the fridge was collected by the guys who allways drive the streets over the weekend to collect whatever they can (especially metal scrap)
My plan was to call the city...

My neighbor did he same with a fridge he had in the garage (I guess)..that also disappeared in no time, old model
So before calling the city or Hydro..put it on the curb for a day over the weekend... :-) these guys are much quicker than the city

When I bought a new fridge a couple of years ago, I tried Hydro, but it would have been a few weeks wait. I instead called someone on Kijiji advertising that they'll pick up scrap metal for free. He said he'll come and didn't show. Called him again and left a message and never called me back. I said forget this, and was able to drag out the fridge myself to the front yard (only scratched the floorboards of my front porch a bit). I went inside to wash my hands, heard a noise, looked outside and two guys driving by were already loading it into their truck.

If you're able to get it outside, then it's faster to just leave it there. If you're physically unable to get it outside yourself, then try Kijiji for "we pick up scrap for free" guys. That Kijiji guy I called didn't show, but there are tons of them and I would've eventually gotten someone to show up.
