Toronto surprised and concerned so many people not wearing face masks in public (blogto article may 17, 2020)

Face masks are officially recommended by public health officials at this time, but it appears some are taking the loosening of restrictions in Ontario as a cue to ditch them.

Reports on social media are mixed as to how many people appear to be wearing masks, but there are definitely lots of complaints that not enough people are doing it.
Parts of Lake Shore Boulevard and other streets were recently opened up to pedestrians and cyclists and blocked off to cars, and it appeared to some people strolling around the area that many were not wearing masks.
The recent beautiful weather in Toronto certainly hasn't been helping motivate people to social distance, but some people say the least people can do who are enjoying the weather in crowded areas is to wear a mask.
you might want to avoid Queen and King Streets if having to navigate fellow pedestrians not wearing masks and making no attempt to social distance as they pass you on the sidewalk freaks you out.
Someone in Toronto actually did an informal survey on Saturday and counted only 22 out of 372 people wearing masks.
Some people are also noting that whereas they saw almost everyone in Toronto wearing masks in days previous, it seems like they're being used less widely now.
Some are concerned with the lack of masks they're seeing on public transit, although the TTC notes that Toronto Public Health has not deemed masks mandatory for travelling on transit.

I went to Home Depot yesterday afternoon. Not because I wanted to, I needed to immediately fix something. There were about 40 people in line to get in. I wore a mask, and I saw four others, and only one employee. Despite the 60 something guy (not mask wearing) coughing regularly (into his hand), they let him right in.

Well I guess we need a strict implementation on wearing face mask. It may not completely eliminate the risk of contacting or spreading the virus but at least it lowers the possibility.

More asians and minorities in scarberia wear masks who actually "get it". The worst hypocrisy are the so-called essential retail workers (other than asian outlets) who never wear masks. Absolutely pathetic. They cry and boo-hoo to the media how they have to work as essential workers and bich and complain about customers not wearing masks and infecting them - yet they DONT wear masks. I was at no frills yesterday and this idiot PC cashier told me not to place my bag on the black ramp thing where they place your groceries on. Yet peeps are touching this same belt everywhere with their bare hands. I then asked where's your mask, dont be a hypocrite. He responds the shield is my mask (plexiglass shield installed by all grocers to separate the cashier and the consumer). Lolololol. How stupid can you be... Proven the beer virus can travel in air moving as particulates. Then the idiotic manager comes over and says masks arent mandatory in ontario - yet he's wearing a mask but his worker isnt. WTF. Well asking peeps not to place your bag on the black ramp isnt an ontario law either. The hypocrisy and stupidity of these people is unbelievable. This is why I have zero sympathy for these essential worker complaints. Hope they get treated as worse when they go out... the same way they treat customers who keep their company in business which keeps them employed. The hypocrisy is palpable with zero knowledge of science.

The increased risk is in enclosed spaces, sustained contact with an infected individual who is verbal and/or coughing/sneezing. Compounded by A/C airflow.

Examples. Isolated correctly not all family members infected in a home, whereas a meat packaging plant fulfills conditions above speaking loudly over machinery in close proximity. Or a shared restaurant meal.

Passing by someone in silence outside or being beside someone in a grocery (rarely > 10s) is pretty minimal, especially if neither of you are talking. Grocery store workers in small break rooms on the other hand.

I would definitely wear a mask on public transit. Preference would have me wear one in stores too to protect others because I have COVID patients and can be a carrier.

Maintain hand hygiene.

You don't need a proper medical mask. Any sort of mouth and nose covering is a vast improvement over going without.

This angers me as well. I haven't left the house much in 2 months, but I do occasionally need to go get groceries. I went to the store on Saturday and a good 90% of the hundreds of people I saw weren't wearing masks. Not only that, a lot of them had that idiotic "anyone wearing a mask is sick" reaction when they were around anyone who was actually taking proper steps to not get sick.

Maybe it depends on the area, going to Costco where I am, I would say 70% are wearing a face covering, and all the staff do. People who don't look out of place and ignorant especially on their site it's titled as a "Mask Requirement" and explained as recommended.

A lot of negative reactions to individuals wearing masks is because the government hasn't made it a requirement. If everyone were required to wear a mask upon entering a store, there would be fewer negative incidences towards mask wearers.

Perhaps the government is afraid to add to the hysteria that already exists or is afraid individuals will stock up on N95 masks, reducing their availability for essential workers. Alternatively, their action led to more hysteria because people aren't idiots....

The government's changing stance on face masks doesn't help either, in part because it's inconsistent with the successful methods proven by other countries. Instead, Canada's attitude tends to be slow and reactive.

I'm glad to hear Trudeau worked out a contract with GM for 10 million face masks, but there were countries doing this 4-5 months ago!
