Traffic question about two way stops.

i have prob a dumb question about traffic laws but i figure better to ask then not knowing.

at a 4 way intersection with only TWO stop signs.

Say a vehicle came to a stop sign first, and wanted to make a left turn.

then a second opposing vehicle came to a stop sign 5 seconds later, and wants to go straight.

both are waiting for traffic to clear before proceeding.

who in this scenerio has the right of way to proceed first? is it first come first serve or does the left turner must yield to the person going straight

Person who stopped first should go first

BUT, if this is in the centre of the universe, then:
- neither driver will be paying attention, and are probably staring at their phones
- both cars will assume they have the right of way,
- get into a collision,
- the left-turner will be at fault because neither has a dashcam,
- no one in the centre of the universe will bother to stop and act as a witness.
- Insurance rates go up
- we all lose

Left turner yields only if both cars arrive at their respective stop signs at the same time. again, in the centre of the universe, everyone arrives at theirs first
When given enough time, all threads on RFD can and will go off on a tangent.

Not here they aren't. Have you seen what happens when they incorporate a roundabout? There's on at Park Place in Barrie, it's chaos lol! I've seen a handful of people use it correctly. During Xmas, you could just sit there and watch the lolz all day.

The car that stops first but regardless, do whatever is necessary to avoid a collision.

learn 2 drive. Problem solved

Just because some drivers are retards doesn't mean progress must be halted. If someone doesn't know to drive in a roundabout, fail the drive test

Says the guy who thinks 2 way stops are too complicated when both cars pull up at the same time. If that's too complicated for someone, they shouldn't be on the roads.

While others need to learn 2 drive, you definitely need to learn 2 read. Quote me exactly where I said they are too complicated.

About 10 years ago my city haphazardly installed a few roundabouts in my neighborhood.

The buses could not navigate them and ended up driving over the curbs crushing the concrete after a few months. At one end of the street a motorist made a left turn without going around and ended up hitting a motorcyclist head-on and he died. From what I've witnessed, drivers here are too stupid to use roundabouts safely and the city is too stupid to execute their installation in a safe and constructive manor

I assume this is the scenario? If so, the car that stopped first has right of way.

If both cars are stopped, you have to be an idiot to have a collision even if you have the right of way. In such situations the first car that moves usually wins. If both move at the same time, one would just slow.

In small towns, this ends with both drivers making eye contact, the driver going straight waving on the driver going left, it is okay to go, to which the driver going left will give a nod of acknowledgement, and go, finishing with a friendly wave on the way past the other driver.

Apologies.. You said they were ********* and roundabouts are so much better, lol. That indicates to me you've got issues navigating simple things like stop signs, merges, etc etc. Stay home, think of the kids.

yes thats the scenerio. thanks helped alot. basically, in this case, first come first serve or from what others have said, if a driver waves one off.

thanks everyone

No the first car does not have the right-of-way. This is why there are so many collisions.

The vehicle that was later getting to the stop line should yield the right-of-way.

If I was car 1 I wouldn't proceed unless and until car 2 waves me to go ahead. I'm not going to depend on him to have seen that I got there first and that he should yield to me. And if I am turning from a side road onto a busy main road, I want to step on the gas, not start a slow cautious turn to ensure car 2 doesn't bolt ahead.

When both drivers who know the rules are driving defensively, sometimes you both end up standing there doing nothing for a few seconds. No big deal.
