Transmission Repair Recommendation: 2012 Honda Odyssey

Hello RFDers,

I am currently looking for an honest repair shop in Scarborough to fix my transmission and was wondering if anyone here can provide some recommendations.

Problem: Engine light is on, and "D" blinks. When I try to shift from "P" to "D", it would choke and make a sound.

An independent oil change shop took a scanner and it showed the following codes:

P0717:
1. Input Shaft (Mainshaft) Speed Sensor (No Signal Input)
2. CVT Input Shaft (Drive Pulley) Speed Sensor Circuit No Signal Input
3. Input/Turbine Speed Sensor "A" Circuit No Signal

P3497:
1. Valve Pause System (VPS) Stuck Off Bank 2
2. Valve Pause System (VPS) Stuck Off

My mechanic told me he doesn't know how to repair transmissions and the bill would be $5000 to repair.

Please help guys.

It's a 2012 Honda Odyssey EX. When I shift from "P" to "D" there would be a thud.

Ths Honda slush box strikes again!

Isn’t there a secret extended warranty offered by Honda on these models?

Isn't these the same rebadged as the Saturn VUE?

Yes, Saturn used the Honda 3.5 V6 in a few model years of the VUE (don’t recall which ones). We had a 2003 VUE with the Opal 3.0 and had no issues with it or the transmission.

Go to honda dealership and ask them how much it will cost. Show them the codes. Maybe the stealership wont charge you as much. Then decide what to do. Other option since this car is getting pretty old is to buy a newer one. Just not Honda...

I would recommend in seeing John at TDS Transmission in Newmarket. Really nice honest guy, reputable shop and he has tons of experience.

Do they charge an inspection fee? If so, how much do they usually charge?

How about telling us where you live? You are asking a national forum for recommendations. Want a place in Ottawa? Not everyone lives in the big Smoke.

Go to Igarage ( the member who ask you what year is your Van). Honest and reliable. He is in Markham.

Do you know if they help with transmission repairs? I went over their website but transmission is not on their service list.

If you are going to dump 5K in a 2012 you might as well use that money for a newer vehicle. You will never get 5K more for yours if you sell or trade in.

May be a transmission sensor (P0717). I think they are externally replaceable. try igarage
I don't think P3497 is transmission related -- It's a VCM error code

So I would need to get another place to fix VCM?

Want us to pay for your repairs too? Lol. You have been given options about taking your ride to some of these other places for another opinion. Let us know what happened or you have more questions after you have followed these leads.

Take it to a place like igarage
Somebody has to do some "hands on" diagnosis to sort out the problems. Error codes are just a starting point for diagnosis
A lot of the sensors/ pressure switches are externally accessible without having to drop and overhaul the transmission
