Trying to get into Tech support from programming job

I am interested in moving away from programming job to tech support.
I do a lot of technical stuff outside of my day job but my previous work experience has never been tech support. I have undergraduate degree in Computer Science and I am currently in my second year of grad school (comp sci. as well).
How do I compete for these jobs with someone with less education and "some" experience in tech support who will probably look better to the interview board than myself since he/she had already done the job. I learned trough life experience that sometimes having more education than other candidates doesn't mean a whole lot .

Any opinions and suggestions would be much appreciated

You could get your ITIL certification. A lot of hiring managers look for that.

If you can get into an interview really highlight your people skills ( I hope you have them) and explain how your programming background has taught you how to solve problems on your own.

I'm not sure where you live but perhaps look for some temp jobs to get experience.
