tv mount over fire place (reno cost)

hi there, i was recently quoted for $1500 (labour alone) to do a tv mount over LED fireplace as shown below.

Just wondering whether the labour cost is in the expected range.

Paid about the same and was happy to do so. It involved an audio visual company that also had to hire an electrician. Even the inspector was blown away with the quality of the work.

What exactly is being done? Installing a mount on the wall alone is 1-200, receptacle & hard wiring tv/iptv box, making every cable not visible can add up but not to 1500. Does that price include stone veneer install or another large job?

Yeah need more details.

$1500 for just the tv mount labour would be ridiculously expensive. I'd take a day off and do it for $1400 lol.

I agree with what Zamboni said, that knowing what is included is really the key. That said I would also caution you on the mounting height. Often installing above a fireplace can result in the TV being uncomfortably high for the viewer. If there is enough distance between the TV and the viewer or the fireplace is pretty low this will not be an issue but I have seen some setups that end up less than ideal. Also heat distribution from the fireplace is something to keep in mind as well, if the area gets pretty hot it may have an impact on the lifespan of the tv. Anyways, just somethings to be cautious about that you may want to discuss with the AV vendor doing the install to make sure they won’t be an issue.

check this quote out (not including the stone, nor the fireplace)

Total cost for your fireplace wall is $11,800
This includes:
prep
framing including all support for future TV install
electrical rough-in including TV outlet, wifi control, and battery wall switch for fireplace
cement board sheeting
6mm porcelain stone slab install on wall face only (supply of stone not included, sides of wall not included)
Electrical finish
Garbage removal and clean up

That looks ridiculously high to me. With fireplace and veneer your getting very close to $20k tax in.

yes im trying to dissect how its this high, the contractor refuses to break it down further. I am seeking other quotes

I think the electrical work here (circuit for fireplace, and a switch/line to turn it off/on) is about maybe less then 1k?

I think the framing work and stuff should be around 1k labour?

Not sure what prep, and other stuff is involved, would putting stone i buy over top be the same as putting on a MDF board once framing is complete

It looks like it's mostly some building material and electrical. Framing, cement board, stone installation and electrical rough-in. $12k labour for that seems pretty steep.

Is this job starting from a bare wall? So no demo involved?

its an existing wall that is not bare i think some say u can build the frame over the existing dry wall others think u should smash out the existing dry wall regardless that demo is generally i think pretty fast.

That price is cheap for a trade. Sounds like a renovator price. Jump on it if you are satisfied with their finished product.

This price is out to left field. This is a price you get when someone DOESN’T want to do it.

$3500-$4500 is what most (quality) trades would charge.

Both are higher but not adding up to that quote. Elec for example, you aren't including the tv outlet he mentioned in quote. The fireplace likely needs a dedicated 20amp circuit so a 12 gauge line must be pulled. Is that easy, an unfinished basement and there is room in the panel? Or panel is full, basement has drywall ceiling and its a 50' run with all joists needing to be drilled.

The quote seems high but tiler alone will charge 1500+ labour. I've seen backsplashes that make me feel seasick they are so wavy, a good tile job isn't cheap.

I have a dumb question should we cut the hardwood floor and tear away the drywall and put the framing down on concrete or is it ok to do this over existing?

Mounting a TV over a fireplace will (a) shorten the life of your TV and (b) place the screen extremely high on the wall (unless your room is very large, in which case you'll be too far away from the TV for optimal viewing).

I doubt it if your mounting it over an electrical fireplace that has heat control. these fireplaces are designed to send heat forward not up

Note: i will be using a swivel mount so u can adjust viewing distance to different eye levels VS convenience of pushing up flush onto wall
