*UPDATED/Resolved*[Q] My phone became blacklisted? Feedback please!

I need some feedbacks from you cellular phone/system gurus.

So here is what happened...

My Nexus 5 (purchased directly form Google) with my Koodo service all of sudden lost connection with the network yesterday morning and was not able to register to Koodo. Since I was at work, I tested my phone with co-workers Fido sim card and it worked as it should. I tested my sim card to his Nexus 4, it worked as it should. Confused.
So I called Koodo support find out what is wrong and I went through the usual process, power cycle, take sim out & in again, manually select and try to connect Koodo cellular network from settings. Nothing was working and support suggested I try a replacement sim card from Koodo.

So this morning I stop by Koodo kiosk (who didn't even have any demo/sample phones to test a sim card), I bought a sim card (**$10.99+tax, more about this later) and activated the sim for me. Put it into my Nexus 5, nothing! Can not register to network.

Fine, I had to rush to work and tested this new sim card with co-worker's new Moto E, it does not work? More confused. Again I tested his sim card (Fido, which there was someone else at work with microSIM, everybody got iPhone with nanoSIM), his sim worked as it should. Even more confused now and frustrated.

I called up Koodo support again and this time supported dug a little deeper into the issue? Placed me on hold several times and came back and told me that my phone has been reported or stolen. On top of that support told me there was a duplicate of my IMEI number. Support also told me to goto Koodo website and search for a link which allow users to verify IMEI number so that I can verify it myself.
Now... I didn't know what my options were and support told me they can not see who have reported as stolen or lost but told me it was reported June 11th in the morning hours. Also told me that since the phone was not purchased from Koodo, I would need to call GOOGLE and have them resolve this.

Now I called Google and the tech support could not figure out what was wrong with my situation. Heck support even asked me to clear the cache of 'Google Play Store service' from the apps list. I said, seriously? what would that do? G Support told me, "Oh that fixed it for some users".
Well that didn't work... and support placed me on hold to compare the IMEI number that was displayed on my phone to see if it is matching the IMEI from back when I made the order and Google shipped it out.
This is where I was placed on hold for like 20minutes+ and I had to hang to go back to work.

Totally frustrated.

So... while this get resolved, I stopped by TELUS store to pick up a pre-paid MOTO E. To make sure, I asked the sales rep if this phone will work with Koodo sim card. Answer I get from the rep is... "Isn't that a old phone?". Heck you are the sales, not me, OMG. Than he said... I can not be sure if it will work with Koodo sim card, you are gonna have to call Koodo and find out or buy Moto E from Koodo for $218. I said why would I pay $60 from Koodo when I and standing here in your Telus store when the price is $150 for same phone. Than I got all pissy mood and just left.

So anyways... sorry for the long type out. Hopefully some of you experts and give me some feedback.

I am gonna call Google again and continue on where I left. (hope I don't have to explain same thing too much).

*i have factory reset the phone too*, still same result.

**Regarding that $10.99+tax for Sim Card, Koodo Rep on the phone credit me $10 when I told him I even had to pay for the new sim card that didn't work. Than I asked, Sim card is only $10?, Rep. said, Yes, Sim Card is only $10!. I said I paid $10.99+tax. Than Rep said... Ok, I'll credit you $1 more. Haha

Wait, your friend's sim card works in your phone? That doesn't sound like blacklisted to me.

Maybe Fido blacklist isn't updated ?
I don't know how that works but... yes.... Fido sim worked.

Just ended a call with Google, they can't do anything. Again told me that carrier must look into it.

OMG, I feel like I have a new paper weight.

Yes,

I have entered my IMEI number on that site. It says... my IMEI is NOT blacklisted.
I checked on Bell site too, it says "Your device is compatible, bring it over!" or something funny like that. Which I assume means good? or their way or saying it?

Only from the Koodo IMEI check site, it is showing as reported.

Than again... protectyourdata site does say it can take upto 48hours for database to be updated? It hansn't been 48hours yet.

But than again... if a carrier blacklist a IMEI, where does that information go? How does it get updated to other carriers? How quickly?
You know what I mean?

Even Google told me, my IMEI is clean. But again... database isn't upto date for everyone? I don't know, where/when did Koodo get the blacklist?

If this was bought straight from Google, how can it be blacklisted? Google doesn't sell insurance, so insurance scam here doesn't make sense. Also, why would Google have the power or authority to blacklist a phone? They are not a carrier. All around weirdness

I even asked TELUS ONLINE Chat Support and the answer I got was...
"It is not compatible, you would still need to unlock it".

ME: Than I told him many Telus Moto E users are reporting online that it works without unlocking it!

REP: I've never heard of this before, hold on. Let me check with my technicians.

Waited few minutes.

REP: Yes, technicians just confirmed to me that you can use Telus phones with Koodo sim card and vice sersa without unlocking it because they use same network.

ME: "yes I told you, good bye"

CLOSED the chat window right away. Telus training failed.

Now I just need to find a store that actually have it in stock. Online order takes too many days to deliever.

Yes it would be weird.
OP should really enter his IMEI here http://www.protectyourdata.ca/check-the ... in-canada/
and see what it says

Very strange indeed.

I would say you need to escalate this in some way. Call into Koodo and try to find out again how/why the phone was blacklisted. Check the protectyourdata.ca site in a few days as well to see if anything changes there.

I know you're probably pissed but when you call try to play dumb. Tell them your phone stopped working, tell them you've tried factory resetting, even bought a new sim etc. These first level tech support reps aren't very bright so don't try to get ahead or outsmart them. Eventually, when they get back to the blacklist reason, try to pry it out of them how/why it was blacklisted.

The dupe thing is a bit concerning though. Hopefully, it's just a mistake. You do have proof afterall that this phone belongs to you so if there's a problem elsewhere, try to show that you aren't the cause of it and try to put the onus on Koodo to make things right, that this is somehow a mistake they've made that they should correct.

I had a friend in the same situation. The phone was bought off Craigslist and had the same IMEI of a phone that was at the Bell store. I wouldn't know the outcome, and sorry this didn't help.

I've already ran my number through ProtecYourData.ca , it came out clean.
I am just gonna wait a day or two and see something get updated.

I have called Koodo like 3 times already but gonna call again to ask few question I didn't think of before...

Like if there was any access to my account past few weeks, etc...
and try to get a answers as to why other IMEI checking sites shows I am clean but Koodo site show report... etc...

Seems like a mistake on Koodo end. However you have all paperwork, start pushing for solution now, don't wait. Reach CCTS, Koodo Twitter/Facebook, start making stink now.

If it is blacklisted on Koodo, it WILL propagate to all north american networks soon.

There is a thread by danieltoronto here whose 3 yr old nexus got blacklisted inexplicably.

Hopefully Google receipt and papers show IMEI# of the phone.

Sounds like your IMEI number may have been cloned to another phone which Koodo has blacklisted either being lost or stolen as it has been mentioned to you. They did say there was a duplicate. Is your Koodo account up to date with regards to payment?

Your case does not appear as bad as mine

Once Koodo has sorted things out, you be ok.
When did you purchase the phone from Google and for how long you have been using it?
You should be fine in a few days

It is death knell for the used market which is dead. That was something the big carriers wanted to accomplish for sometime.

Yet it was as usuals the customers who pushed for it and carriers didn't want to due to exactly what happenings now

No different when the stupid people pushed for less choice and demanded less options for length of contracts...ended up with 2 year contract limits and much higher prices

Those idiots probably think demsnding max 3 yr car financing contratcs and mortgages would mean its cheaper for them too lol

A blacklist is a good idea because it makes theft less appealing. The problem is that the current implementation of the national blacklist is broken.

As for 2-year contracts: the old system was abusive, especially the awful 10% Koodo and Virgin tabs that required 40+ months to pay off. And let's not forget the punitive cancellation fees charged by the big three ($400 just for leaving a bad contract!).
