Figure id give everyone a heads up.

Richard Sutherland reports that you need need to take a covid test 1 day before going to USA, not 3 as before.

NEW - Washington Post reports that U.S president Biden plans to announce Thursday that the U.S "Will require everyone entering the country to be tested one day before boarding flights, regardless of their vaccination status or country of departure."

I also heard the US was considering a 7 day quarantine for all travelers to the US. I really hope they exempt Canadians as this is going to throw a monkey wrench into my Christmas Florida trip plans. Would really mess up the NHL as well, so not sure if they would actually go through with it.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention plans to toughen coronavirus testing and screening of international fliers to the United States by requiring them to provide a negative result from a test taken within 24 hours of departure, a spokesman for the agency said Tuesday night.

The move to strengthen the testing regime reflects growing concern about the Omicron variant, a highly mutated form of the virus that was first documented by researchers in South Africa and detected in more than a dozen countries around the world.

“C.D.C. is working to modify the current global testing order for travel as we learn more about the Omicron variant; a revised order would shorten the timeline for required testing for all international air travelers to one day before departure to the United States,” said the spokesman, Jason McDonald.

“This strengthens already robust protocols in place for international travel, including requirements for foreign travelers to be fully vaccinated,” he added.

Earlier Tuesday, a senior administration official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because no final decisions had been made, said health officials were examining whether current testing — which allows fully vaccinated people to take a test up to three days before departing on a flight to the United States — was stringent enough. It was unclear whether the new 24-hour rule would require a rapid P.C.R. or antigen test.

For now as per CDC that was only for UNVACCINATED people.... That threw me off too because my fam is going to new orleans for Xmas.

So far this is NOT the case, BUT the kids will have to be tested 3-5 days upon arrival

don't think they'll go that far but i can see them joining majority of countries to require PCR tests especially as it's currently uncertain if the rapid antigen already with higher false negatives can even detect omacron . WHO has only said PCR tests can detect it but they're looking into whether other tests like rapid antigen will work at detecting omacron
“The widely-used PCR tests continue to detect infection, including infection with Omicron, as we have seen with other variants. Studies are ongoing to determine whether there is any impact on other types of tests, including rapid antigen detection tests,” WHO said in an statement.

So far this is for air travel and honestly it make sense for the Antigen tests since you can get the results in 15 mins. Better chance of the passenger not having Covid if tested within 24 hrs of the flight than 3 days before.
Expect all countries to tighten rules just like Canada did. Though how Canada will test everyone at the airport without long delays is beyond me. Expect 3hrs + delays on arrival.

I don't know, this article I read states "The mandatory self-quarantine would be in place even for those with full vaccination and a negative Covid-19 test. People found violating the requirements might be subjected to fines and penalties."

Yep.

Reading this right now and it seems that they will do 1 day test prior and MAYBE do a FULL 7 day quarantine. The 7 day is a BIG one. Basically KILLS your travel IMO

If they were to switch from antigen to PCR requirement a day before flight, that’s going to be very expensive and only a few places can do it. I have a trip to the US on Dec 25 and I fear there wouldn’t be many places able to do this within such a short turnaround time.

You do you know you can't enter the USA without 2X jabbed right??? At some point soon you'll need to have a booster to be considered fully vaxxed (Israel is) , soon after followed by the 4th and then the new Omega variant shots in late '23. After that? Who knows.

Not too sure about the rule-changes in the future, but at least the symptoms from Omicron seem mild, so people might not be so concerned soon after realizing Omicron is not so dangerous.

The covid virus seems to be evolving into a flu-like virus - that's how it can survive. If it's too deadly, it will be eliminated quickly.

OP should really add "Air Travel" in the title, otherwise it could mislead folks.

Given that the US entry test is antigen this shouldn't be a huge issue, but yeah if they switch to PCR it'll be difficult.

Antigen test is so cheap just get two done on way to the airport and even if one gets delayed you will still get the other.

That could change and the antigen test not be accepted. Although I suspect that's unlikely. Still, even an antigen test will deter cross-border shoppers.

Getting appointments is the hardest part. I have been trying to book our tests for the past few days, and can't seem to get any for my travelling date (Dec 21) on either WalMart or Costco's site.
