USB-C Dock --> Non USB-C Laptop

Hello,

Asking for a computer newbie (...me!).

I have a USB-C dock, but a Non USB-C Laptop.

Is there an adaptor of sorts that would connect the two, but also retain all the features of the dock (ie: charging, external monitor, USB inputs, etc.).

Thanks in advance!

You can convert USB-C to USB-A, but you will usually lose some of the functionality. Which dock and which laptop? What type of USB-A ports does your laptop have?

If the laptop doesn't have USB-C charging, you can't charge it via a USB-A port - it will have a barrel or square port that only fits the appropriate charger.

Video out from the dock will also not work, for that you need the USB-C port to support "Alternate Mode" - USB A does not, and not all USB-C ports do so either.

You can use the dock as a glorified USB hub though.

Yes, there is an adapter. No, it will not allow all the functions to work.

USB-A does not support Power Delivery, so charging will not be possible.

If the dock uses DisplayLink technology, it will still allow external monitor support. But due to lower bandwidth of most USB-A ports, the number of external monitors may be limited, e.g. 2 instead of 3.

We need to know which hub before confirming it will work. If it's cheap <$100 hub, it's not likely to support DisplayLink, which means it will not work.

That's unfortunately not a DisplayLink dock.

Unlike most other universal docking stations, Dell's dock doesn't use DisplayLink technology. Instead, it employs USB Type-C's alternate mode to send a video signal directly from your GPU to the dock.
