User banning and thread locking

I've noticed a number of users get banned for no visible reason. The "Stuck in home my wife bought" thread seemed interesting and people were making interesting comments, but it got locked and the user banned. I don't know why the user got banned, other than he had another user name.

I've also noticed threads get banned for things like "low content" or "flamebait" (whatever that means), even though the topics were interesting, say like that "Thank you, Mama Merkel" thread and people were responding. For others, there's no reason at all; they just get shut down.

Anyone have an explanation for it? I'm wondering if it's because some users have certain views about certain topics, that gets them out. Maybe RFD does not want to be associated with certain ideologies? Thoughts?

In another world
I haven't been a long time RFD user, as some others, but for what I can infer, "low content" means, to me, that people create a thread that won't be interesting enough to keep it open. For example, I can't remember which OP created a thread a few days ago that his avatar's GIF is no longer moving, so the OP was sad, and the thread was locked after a couple of comments for "low content".

It's because they have more than one account or even multiple ones. :

Mods, please don't. This is not a site suggestion topic; but an off-topic one about users on the off-topic forum. Thanks.

If this topic survives...

I think it will get moved, BTW the correct title of that particular forum is

SITE COMMENTS & SUGGESTIONS

This topic might not be about suggestions specifically, but it is a comment on how the site is being run... and so no doubt it is going to get moved there (IMHO based on watching how these things have gone in the past)

Always an issue with forums and moderating power. RFD is probably OK overall as most moderators are OK, but lack of visibility always means lack of accountability.

As long as there is enough traffic, supported by people posting links, and YP is making money, I suppose everything is fine for them.

Agree that this thread should stay here.

I'm still wondering what happened to the guy trying to pick up the bus driver. I think that was locked as well.

Why we ban users is not something we share publicly but they were likely banned for breaking forum rules, of which having multiple user names is one.

As for the closing of threads, we do so usually in accordance with forum rules. We try our best to share the reasons why when it's not obvious. Things like Low Content are sometimes subject to a judgement call, but we would not close a thread because of our personal thoughts on what is being discussed. If a thread serves no purpose or benefit, it would likely be closed for low content. If a thread is being created with the intent of creating a ruckus amongst the community, we would likely close of for flamebait. Again, a judgement call in some cases.

Yes, I received reports about your thread being in the wrong forum and reviewed it. I then locked your thread for low content and gave you my reasoning there.

Feel free to escalate it to TomRFD directly if you disagree with the decision.

To the OP, I can't speak for other mods but I never mind if someone shoots me a polite PM and asks about a moderation decision. If I have time I will usually explain my thinking or the rule in question. I can't answer questions about why other users were banned though and frankly most of it is mundane anyway, you aren't missing anything.

I'm not escalating it to @TomRFD The action just reminded me of this thread.

It is quite onesided but I've come to expect that too.

Thanks

Yeah, if somebody doesn't like the way a discussion is going, no need for them to keep reading and/or posting. I thought it was great fun. Too many sensitive people nowadays.

so somebody reported ... well great ... but why is locked ?
It was reported as flamebait and trolling. After review, the mod that closed it agreed with that reasoning and thus locked the thread. But you didn't really need that explained, right?
