(VENTING)Costco.ca purchasing bulky item with change of address in beetween the exchange process.

Long story short: don't ever assume online orders will save you time when you don't have time.

this is a rare case, maybe just unlucky:
  1. Bought SERENE 10" FIRM KNG Item # ‌1212630‌ at address A from Costco.ca.
  2. Received the order at address A, move the mattress to address B.
  3. Opened it to find out it was not the size that I ordered (everything on the package indicates that it is the correct size)
  4. I called Costco.ca they said they would exchange, but I have to bring the mattress BACK to address A so they can pick it up.
  5. They will only deliver the exchanged mattress to address A.
  6. I agreed because I was stressing about moving and wasn't thinking straight.
  7. A day after, a friend agreed to help me deliver the wrong sized mattress to the costco warehouse.
  8. It was a bad idea: apparently, the action complicated their entire process. It involves UPS, Costco.ca, Costco warehouse and the mattress supplier.
  9. I was surprised that the REP at costco tried to convince me to bring the mattress back to pick it up at address A.
  10. After 30 minutes of headache and exchange, they agreed to have the mattress
  11. They agreed to deliver the correct size mattress to address B
  12. A day later - today, I received an order confirmation to be delivered to address A.
  13. to update the order address, it took me another 30 minutes of calling back and forth to find out I needed to call them again once the order is shipped.
So lesson learned, convenience cannot be assumed.
Should have refused Costo.ca exchange offer and bought a mattress at a retail store.

Sorry, but I think your issue started with point #2. From their standpoint, they are only responsible for delivering and resolving issues where you requested the shipment to go - Address A. What you do with the item after it's delivered is not their issue. BECAUSE it's a mattress and the shipping company is involved is what exasperated the issue. You wouldn't have as much of an issue if it was something you could return to the warehouse in person yourself easily.

That is an excellent point from Costco.ca perceptive, what would you advice me in this case? I wonder if there are better ways to approach this incident.

Why didn't you get the bed shipped to Address B in the first place? Assuming that when you order something that large, you want it delivered to where it's ultimately going to be and also assuming that there wouldn't be an issue with the order.

As much as I wanted I did not have access to address B when ordering the mattress. I wanted to have the mattress ready at the moment of moving. Since I am going to have a moving truck, I figured I'd move it over. There shouldn't be any problem with that except here I am.

I am not sure why Costco uses UPS for bulky items, they seem to have issues with bulky/heavy items. Last year I order 6 kits of Embassy ceiling at Costco.ca and UPS delivered it. It was multiple boxes and some were bulky and/or heavy (but nothing a single healthy guy can't handle). They delivery guy could not lift them, I had to go inside his truck to retrieve the boxes... (and he kept swearing that it is too heavy, not very professional in front of customers). UPS should not have accept this contract if they cannot do it. It is a different story than yours but I was not impressed by UPS (I won't blame Costco, UPS accepted the contract, they should fulfill it). It was not a curbside delivery, it was a "truck at your door delivery" Winking Face
Try not! Do or do not, there is no try...

Well, that sucks. I had a king mattress delivered and it was very cumbersome for the delivery guys to move it into the room it ended up for.

I am a bit confused as a king mattress is significantly larger than anything else, so unless you weren't there to receive it, how did you not know it wasn't right when it was delivered?

Stuff is easy to buy, just avoid buying anything bulky in the middle of a move to save yourself a headache

Sleeping on the couch or evening the floor or your old bed for a couple days is no big deal. Can also just drive the moving truck to Costco and pick up a mattress on the day of the move

You were right, i was not there at the moment of delivery and i thought it is too light for a King when moved to a new address.

Costco customer service for their online portion is awful in my experience. We bought a generator last year and when I opened it the generator was cracked. I requested a replacement and was told Day & Ross would reach out to me to schedule pickup of the old one. It turned out that actually meant they would call me and say “We’re doing your area next week on xxxx day and will be by sometime during business hours. An adult must be available to sign.” I called back to Costco to inform them they need an alternate plan as I was not taking 8 hours off work unpaid (I’m in trades and work hourly) unless they feel like paying my wages for the day (obviously I knew that wouldn’t happen). I was offered a $50 gift card for the trouble of a day off. The price of the generator was significantly higher (also no longer even close to a “deal”) if I stayed home unpaid so I told them I’m not returning the Day & Ross calls to book as I will not be staying home for this under any circumstance. My new generator had already arrived so I had nothing to lose. As far as I’m concerned if they ship a damaged product it is their problem to resolve, not mine. After a couple weeks of calls from Day & Ross they finally said “We will pick up without an adult to sign” so I left it out for them. Eventually everything was resolved but it took a lot of time as well as me standing my ground. The chances of me using their online store again is extremely low.

This isn't as rare as you might imagine, especially with mattresses.

I just purchased a mattress for my son (bought few weeks ago) who is moving to a downtown condo however he takes possession April 15th (Good Friday) and with no deliveries available on that holiday and booking the elevator and timing of delivery we decided to have the mattress delivered to my residence a few days prior, then we can move it in the day he takes possession.

The issue we run into is that should something be wrong with the mattress we will have to move to my residence one more time before Costco will pick up and do the return. Like you i believe Costco will not pick up at his new condo address, it has to be in the original delivery location.

My son has now gotten permission to move in a day earlier on April 14th, so going to call up the moving company from the link on the order page and see if we can make a change on the address and date to his new condominium address instead of my current address. On the link for tracking on the Costco site you can change the delivery date/time, however no provision to change the delivery address.

So we'll see if we can call the number and change the address for delivery, if not then it will come here and we'll move it down in a separate trip.

So i do not think it is an isolated issue with changing a time or place of delivery, it's understandable no one likes changes however i think it should be manageable long as it isn't within 48 hours of delivery to be fair.

**One item i see as an issue is a person has delivered to a condo, moves 6 months later to a new residence and requires a warranty return. If Costco does not wish to pick up at an alternate location, and frowns upon return to a store location....seems to be a problem not yet solved. In that regard might make sense to have delivered to my house as that address will not likely be changing in years to come.

sleep on an air mattress or the couch for a night and have the mattress delivered to the condo the next day..? lol that's what we did many moons ago.

It's not the end of the world to be without a mattress for one night..

Sound advice and one that i gave my son haha. Bless his soul however the kid is excited to be moving out on his very first place, and he has guys with trucks who will do the secondary move of the mattress for him. The benefit of getting older is learning from experience so that we get more done with less effort, however would trade that experience for youth in an instant even if it does make for additional work lol. What it like to be young again...lol.

Cheers.
