This must be worse than a fair price to be awful. What are some fair prices for similar spec machine?

The new price for current gen, same specs on the dell site is $1900

This is still cheaper than new i3 or less that has less ram. I’d take older i5 over newer i3 or less, even accept as equivalent. $550 and up, but for a lesser machine.

This seems good to save a couple hundred bucks. It seems priced fairly. Probably the best you can buy for $500. Feel free to share link to better deals.

Dell has been on the tier of low quality of laptops. Not the lowest yet, but close enough.

I would avoid buying dell laptop desktop unless it is like really low priced to offset its bad design and quality.

The CPU and pricing are a tad off, otherwise the other specs are usable still, even though the machine is a few years old. If you can find a comparable option on Kijiji or even Criagslist for cheaper, I'd advise that instead of buying from retail. Sometimes you find deals better for cheaper, so I would look for better ROI/Value...
Thank you RFD community for helping me with spending money!

Dell's Latitude line of laptops is their business line and has a much higher build quality than any sub-$1,000 laptops. I've been using a refurb Latitude E7450 for 3 or 4 years and it's been fine. Where else will you find 16GB ram and 256GB ssd, FHD touchscreen and Windows 11 Pro for less than $500? Provided it's in A grade condition, I'd say it's very reasonable.

A lot of RFD'ers are not familiar with business or commercial line products and their quality is that much higher/better than consumer line products. So not uncommon comments from above. Similar to that of Lenovo and ThinkPad vs thinkbook or yoga. Thinkpads are tanks despite their specs.

I would agree that the price given the product line is decent. Yes you can get a newer consumer laptop that may seem better spec wise but the dell consume build quality is going to be completely crap compared to a latitude.

For a comparison of what $500 can get you (if you must stick with a refurb corporate laptop...and I'm not saying either one is a good deal at all):
Bauer Systems has the ThinkPad T480S with an i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD for $460. Not sure what the display is though. With W10P...which you can upgrade to W11 for free.

The display should at least be a FHD:

The benefit of retail in this case is a one year warranty and 15 day return policy.

In that case I'd take the ThinkPad hands down. You got my vote.

I used to work at Visions back in 2016 and these pos reconditioned laptops were barely functional 75% of the time.

They’d send a nice box of defective laptops to sell customers

That is not true of Latitude. They are the workhorse of the Fortune 500, and easily repairable, and I've never had one die in 12 years.
I'm on my 4th. My daughter still uses one with a 4th gen i7 and it runs circles around the school issued Chromebook.

Came here to say exactly this, I bought a used T480s with i5 8350u, 8gb ram upgradeable and fhd screen, 256 nvme ssd for like $225 CAD. For $30 upgraded to 16gb ram. And the build quality is miles miles better than this dell trash. Magnesium chassis and cf lid.

$500 for something with crappier specs is garbage.

Even the bauersystems price for the T480s is garbage, these go for like $300-$400 cad all day on ebay

8th gen i5 is still pretty usable imo, even for how old it is, but yeah it's a bit much for $500.

You could browse sites like refurb.io and Bauer systems for comparable laptops for much less.

I personally just bought a Latitude 5290 tablet with an i5 8350u off refurb.io for $189. Old yes, but I think that price is more what it should be.

$498 for a refurbished laptop isn't the worst price, but it's also not great, either. For these specs, I would expect about $375 for a refurbished laptop. This is a "reconditioned laptop," though, which could just mean Visions took it into the back room, dusted it off, inside and out, cleaned the monitor, reimaged the machine and made sure it powered on.

Cheers,
Doug

Agreed. I have a Dell Latitude E6440 with 4 GB of RAM. It's a big sluggish now, due to the 4 GB of RAM, but if I replaced the HDD with an SSD and upgraded to 8 GB of RAM, I bet I could get another 5-10 years out of him. :)
