[Visions Electronics] nVidia Shield TV Pro $229

nVidia started US$20 off for Shield TV Pro a couple of days ago in the US, and it seems they are starting the same in Canada as well. Last sale price was $239.99 from Newegg.

Regular price is $259.99.

Visions is offering it for $229 as I write but other retailers may follow later. Non-pro barrel version was $169.99 during BF.

This pro version has 3GB RAM, 16GB user memory/system and 2 x USB ports to add external storage, and you can run PLEX server on it.

Edit 1: $229.99 at Canada Computers, Best Buy, Amazon and Staples.

Edit 2: If you have an Amazon Business account, you might be able to use a coupon code 5CHEERS20 for $25 off. It may be targeted and YMMV.

I kinda regret not getting this over appletv.
There’s no way to economically block
YouTube ads in appletv. Otherwise they’re
both amazing boxes with unique strengths

Started looking into these and looks like they're overdue for a refresh.

The old NUC HTPC is probably due for a replacement soon.

Funny thing is despite being overdue for a refresh, there really isn’t anything better on the market unless you want to use a desktop.

Revised in 2019. Still the best, IMO.

It's been revised every 2 years (except this year) since its launch in 2015. The refreshes generally remove features and retain the same cpu. The 2017 to 2019 removed most ports from the low end model and turned it into a tube with 30% less ram.

AFAIK they patched the cpu bootloader bug Nvidia discovered with the switch launch and updated the fab tech so it's smaller traces and faster which won't really be noticeable to a user browsing Disney+ or Netflix as all of them are already very fast. I don't think much else changed spec-wise. Some audio codecs may have been added to hardware, iirc one audio codec can't be added with software updates or something.. needs a hardware key

Also the tube is $20 off, but I would recommend the pro unless space is an issue.

Not NEPEAN
Can the Shield TV (non pro) run IPTV, Kodi, etc.? I am a pretty basic user, still rocking a Nexus Player, but I bought a Fire Stick 4k and not liking it (casting doesn't seem to work as seamlessly as Nexus Player for Spotify, browser video, etc. even Prime Video (from another account)).
