I thought they were only Wholesale.

Assuming I used FPL (which I don't) this would be acceptable to me.
With the number of cell phones around nowadays I'd rather call 911 on a cell rather than voip.

And I am actually confused with 911 support in FPL. People mentioned in this thread that E911 is free with FPL. But this link mentions a per-call fee of 35$ for 911 calls:
It used to be free, so this is a sudden change introduced recently. Also, it should be noted that no notice of the change was sent to
customers. FPL's official position is that the charge exists. I believe, legally, notification of change in terms of service must be sent to customers.
Consequently, part of me wonders whether this is a real fee or a just a threat to dissuade test calls to e911.
To be fare, this is probably the only way Fongo can comply with new government regulations.
I'm not sure I understand. How did FPL not comply before? E911 has always been included with FPL, and a number of people made calls to e911 using FPL in the past and were never charged. But now a $35 per use fee has been introduced.

FPL isn't Fongo btw. They are treated as separate entities.

I eventually ported my number to FPL and simply pointed it to my cell because my home phone system is bluetooth and my cell rings on the handsets when I am home. I am completely happy with this solution since I have the cell with all the services I need (call waiting, call answer, Canada-wide calling, and some US LD minutes, etc.). If you don't have a cell then you will want/need to do the FPL SIP for voicemail, etc. After all the discussion, it was clear that the combination of FPL and GV was perfect. I'm loving only paying the cell phone bill (a nice loyalty plan that was a bit higher than my home phone but is mobile with data) and nothing else.

I put the GV on the OBi and it is working perfectly. I have no idea about what calling 911 on GV would do, but I'm sure it won't land you in a Canadian centre.

I will always call 911 from my cell, so I'm not concerned about the FPL fee. I'm sorry I don't have a better answer for you on that front.

Won't work. GV doesn't support 911.

If the US dollar goes much higher, I'll be switching from VOIP.ms to Start.

Okay, but you’re quoting something from 2015.

There’s Home Trust Preferred Visa, Rogers World Elite Mastercard, Fido Mastercard, and Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite to name some alternatives off the top of my head.

Rogers and Fido MCs do have forex fees, but the cash back on foreign purchases more than makes up for the difference, unless you’re getting refunded on a forex purchase. I don’t have either of those cards (so I’m not advocating for their use) and do not plan on applying for them.

FWIW, you can’t use VoIP numbers to obtain Google Voice numbers anymore either.

And Freephoneline VoIP unlock keys now cost $79.95+tax. (Edit: this was written before the $10 price increase on May 18, 2018).

Much has changed since this thread was created.

Edit: I do now have a couple of the cards I just mentioned merely for forex purchases. Whether someone wants to apply for them is up to the individual (I couldn't care less what people use).

Both vonage.ca and italkbb.ca works for Can$ credit card.
There is zero need for upfront proprietory hardware to purchase as both provide you with an ATA that link to your router and phone system.
Vonage.ca is pricier and better in voice qual

Both Vonage and iTalkBB have a history of selling locked ATAs (if that situation has changed, I'm not aware). The only proprietary hardware mentioned in this thread is sold by Ooma, and unless you're able to unlock ATAs sold by Vonage or ITalkBB, those devices are just as limiting as Ooma's. That is, the customer is restricted to the service provider via the hardware that's issued.
Vonage is a rip-off, imo, for average users. And yes, iTalkBB does sound worse, in my experience when calling outside of Canada, which I can only attribute to their choice of carriers.

Freephoneline, VoIP.ms, Anveo, Callcentric, etc., do not sell hardware.

Fongo Home Phone does sell hardware, but at least the ATA they sell isn't locked.

Wow...reading your other inputs is like reading a phd thesis (I never comprehend getting a phone to use could be that complicated)
Actually it is very simple in this case. They have not changed at all. Nobody cares if the ATA is locked or not. If you do not like their service (usage of the ATA included), you just end the service and return the ATA.
Basically the service fee is inclusive of a (hidden)rental of the ATA LOL
Hmm remember the heading re usage of Can fund

The ATAs issued by iTalkBB and Vonage are proprietary insofar as they’re locked (or admin password protected) to the service provider. Consequently, there was no need for you to mention "proprietary"; doing so hurts your position.
as both provide you with an ATA that link to your router and phone system
Will you let us know what device mentioned in this thread can't be connected to "your router and phone system"? If you can't, there's no point in mentioning proprietary because the service providers you're recommending also issue locked devices like Ooma does.
Nobody cares if the ATA is locked or not.

If you do not like their service (usage of the ATA included), you just end the service and return the ATA.
Sounds so simple

I could almost consider those complaints as being atypical, except the cancellation complaints also apply south of the border:
