[Walmart] 2nd Gen Google Chromecast Yellow ***$29.00***

Yes, this is more than the historical low of $25 or $24.94, but if you just got a new monitor or a new TV, this is a pretty economical way to turn a non-smart / semi-smart device into a smart device.

AC Wireless network support is the big difference.

Yeah, that's a high bandwidth cast - framerate isn't great and it'll disconnect if it gets really bad.

Best tip I can offer is having a separate Wifi Network for Chromecasts and any IoT - just buy a router and set up a new 5Ghz network for chromecasts and 2.4Ghz for any other IoT stuff. Use a different channel than your main network. Basically, this means everything on this network isn't sharing wifi bandwidth with any other phones/pcs in your home. I've found this usually gives me enough bandwidth to do a screenshare.

If you want to get fancy with security, put it on a separate VLAN, and forward all DNS queries through a PiHole.

I picked up two of these. these are great if you use them for audio - just buy some HDMI(female) ->3.5mm stereo converters, and plug them into whatever audio systems you have. You can even group chromecasts like a makeshift Sonos.

No, the gen 2 has dual-band AC.

The differences are trivial: the gen 3 has a faster processor for an unnoticeable 15% speed increase, it comes in fewer colours, and it lost the little magnet on the HDMI cable.

The gen 1 still works fine, and actually has more memory than subsequent generations (not used), but only had 2.4 GHz WiFi.

All are limited to 1080p. You need the more expensive Chromecast Ultra (and lots of WiFi bandwidth) for 4K streaming.
