Alkaline Batteries can leak if left in a device unused for a long time. energizer lithium battery supposedly will not leak and they will even guarantee they wont they says the will repair or replace any devices damaged if they leak.

Question though... if everyone has a cell phone, why not just use the phone as a FM receiver?

This doesn't need headphones as an antenna, the batteries last far longer than your phone, you can keep spares on hand, and you can multitask, use the radio and use your phone elsewhere or save its battery for other uses.
And it has AM.

Fair enough.

I wasn't thinking along those lines. I figured this was someone who wanted it just to listen to some FM tunes.

I had grabbed one for emergency preparedness at $20, its a decent device, not the high quality and strong reception of yesteryear radios but for what you can get today its good. At $9 i'd grab another one if covid wasn't a risk.
