OP, you need to give more information, like which actual store has it for that price. Prices and especially stock levels are different from store to store.
$299 are first generation of Arcade 1UP

Street Fighter II is the easiest to mod if you want to convert it into a MAME machine.

Are the joysticks any good? Would love to play some MAME on a good stick. Anyone seen em in Montreal/Laval?

The stock stick on the first generation cab is pretty bad. I have to replace mine with happ. Later batches were upgraded to some Sanwa clone and people are saying those havereasonable quality.

Can I remove whatever runs in there and just plug a PC to the screen and controller? I have a PC with Batocera and 37k ROMs already in it.

You'll need an adapter like this to be able to connect your PC to the monitor, and a USB encoder like this to connect the joysticks and buttons.

You need to call store to have them physically check if it is in stock.

I bought the sf2 one from London drugs. I was aware of ppl's complaint about the screen quality issues. I returned mine for the same reason. It was a hassle to assemble and disassemble so I prob won't go through that again unless it was $150 or less. The newer arcade1ups use better monitors from what I hear.

Third generation cabinets are much better. The best one to mod is the Marvel one due to the six button layout.

New generation features:
* Better screen that is slightly tilted for nicer viewing angles
* Decent Sanwa clone joysticks and buttons
* Dual speakers with adjustable volume rocker
* Control panel is slightly raised up for comfort
* Included riser and plexiglass cover for the control panel

If you want to mod it, you just need a Raspberry Pi, two USB encoders, and a LCD controller at the bare minimum. Further mods can be done to use the built-in speakers and the integrated power/volume buttons, or to add a coin button.
Brown ahead for Bure. Bure going in.. he scores! Pavel Bure has won it for the Vancouver Canucks! It's a triple overtime hat-trick for Vancouver!
