Walmart avocadoes have treated me well. Nothing wrong with them at all and for 1.87 that's a great deal.

When they're green and rock hard, is there a trick or something to look for to identify the avocadoes that will ripen nicely?

Agree, I eat avocados all the time alone or on bagels with honey. I used to buy them everywhere, few places have the large ones that ripen nicely, taste and texture.

Just buy them and test it every day. Once they are a little soft, where you can press it without feeling hardness like a baseball, put them in the fridge. They should last for a while (1 - 2 months)

Sometimes they don't ripen properly, turning brown or stringy before it is ripe/creamy

I like the small one for single serve. The Costco one is too big and cannot be finish on a single serve.

Honestly avocados are hit and miss.

I have had avocados that were ripe but they did not have much avocado flavor. Others were super rich and creamy.

It is the luck of the draw but you just cant let it get too ripe.

Agreed, avocados last for me maybe 7 days in the fridge too. If you put them in the fridge too early, you mess up their ripening cycle and they dont ripen too well once you take it back out.

Are Avocados ever frozen when they shipped to us in Canada? Super hit or miss, sometimes they are perfect, other times its just a little soft and already browning on the inside with those brown/black spots.

I find the Costco ones are also the least hit/miss, I generally don’t need to toss them fridged or not.

Regarding avocado from Costco and Walmart/RCSS
If you want 95% good avocado - then only Costco and only when they get it from Mexico. If it is from Peru you have 95% of getting brown avocado. The same story with Walmart and RCSS almost always 95% of getting brown avocado.
And reason for that that Walmart and RCSS freezing them in warehouses to store them longer. The same problem with avocado from Peru - they are freezing them on cargo ships.
Frozen avocado is dead avocado.
I personally stopped buying them from Walmart/RCSS because of that. Even for $1 per bag, it is just a wasting of $1
PublicMobile :: $40/15GB x 3

Interesting, I’d buy and put it in the fridge then take the softest one out and test everyday before eating. Didn’t know I can somewhat go backwards.
