Walmart grocery pickup- Online price or In-store price?

I am planning to make some grocery pickups, but I noticed that one of the kitchen item I want to buy has cheaper in-store price than the online price. Yet, even after I have selected the store I am picking from, the online check-out is charging me the online price.

Anyone know if I will eventually be charged the store price or online price when I make the pick-up? Any idea if this price can be adjusted during pickup?

If you buy it online you will pay the online price.
If you buy it at the store you will pay the store price.
They are two separate entities.

That's curious. For grocery pickup, it's usually the same price (this isn't the same as ordering from online fulfillment where the price can be different, at least in my experience). Also note that I'm talking about Walmart Grocery, *not* the pickup in store shipping option for online sourced orders (which can have a different cost). Yeah, it's confusing, but basically means staying in the green Walmart Grocery section on the website or the Grocery tab on the app to have the store pricing.

What item is it and which location?

Walmart price match themselves for 30 days so if the price is lower in store, you can just goto customer service and price match (note only if they sell it cheaper, not if it’s cheaper elsewhere). At least that’s what it says on their website (haven’t tried price matching since 2020).

If at the time of order fulfillment it's cheaper in stores, they will automatically adjust it to that price, and issue you a refund.

You'll be able to see it on the "Ready for Pickup" email - the total will be lower.

BE AWARE (cuz others have been caught up by this) …
Walmart is one of those online Retailers that sell both their own goods
And then goods that are fulfilled by others
AKA … Marketplace Retailers

So often that’s part of the issue that shoppers find confusing

Honestly there are lots of LAYERS these days to online shopping

You got shopping direct from a store for curbside pick up
Where the store employees are doing the picking

You got ship to store … and ship to home
Which most likely is sending items from a central warehouse … or direct drop by the manufacturer
(Which is often the case if it’s listed as MARKETPLACE it’s got nothing to do with the Retailer … be that Walmart, RCSS, The Bay, Best Buy, or Amazon etc )

You got things like InstaCart that is a 3rd Party doing the picking & delivery
AND Setting their own prices (it’s basically a 3rd Party Reseller with their own websites that just uses images from the main stores … but sets their own prices)

Also you got brick & mortar stores who now sell online
As another division (Another Division … also means one side doesnt have to price Match to the other side )
So prices can be different Instore for them vs online

Good example of this Costco

Prices may be higher or lower in one or the other dependent on WHICH ONE the Retailer deems more important to their own biz model
Some places it’s more Instore (more overhead)
Some places it’s more online … perhaps to account for shipping etc

Costco uses the model for example where it’s more online
They claim it’s to cover shipping
But more likely it’s cuz they really want people in their warehouses they are more prone to impulse buy

I know when we shop Costco online it’s cuz we are after a specific thing
When we shop Costco in store … like many other Costco shoppers we can get caught up in WHATS NEW or FOR A LIMITED TIME ONLY

So there you have it …
Not everything is automatically cheaper just cuz it’s sold online
May not be a good deal at all *
You still as a Consumer have to do your homework and know your prices etc

* lots of folks duped by these MARKETPLACE Merchants
Cuz places like Walmart online May sell the goods
But they aren’t the best when it comes to after sales service (like returns / warranty etc)
It’s only then the store will tell you STRAIGHT UP
That it’s a 3rd Party Reseller ..and NOT THEM
So it’s between you and the Reseller

Here’s one example of a Walmart Marketplace nightmare with a Reseller

There are lots of other Marketplace Reseller stories here on RFD that are similar

Walmart Grocery orders are fulfilled from available store stock and charged the in-store price. The full amount of the online grocery order is charged on the same day of the scheduled delivery or pickup.

As of September 2021, customers can enjoy shopping enhancements on Walmart.ca, including the addition of the "Grocery" department within the main menu on Walmart.ca. This means that customers can now shop for groceries together with the rest of Walmart’s general merchandise categories for a one-stop shopping experience! Check out some more new and improved ways of shopping on Walmart.ca:

  • Shop for fresh groceries — Enjoy one-stop shopping with both groceries and general merchandise available within the “All Departments” menu on Walmart.ca.
  • Schedule a pickup or delivery — Use the new “Book a slot” link to set up your scheduled pickup or delivery order. Orders with grocery items must continue to have a scheduled time slot.
  • See shipping options when browsing — Learn if your item is eligible for same day or next day pickup from the product details thumbnail.
  • Search departments fast — In the search bar, browse for an item in a select department to narrow down your search.

I can confirm you are right. To add to that, if in store price is higher than online price, then they charge higher price. So, it doesn't matter what prices we see online, for grocery pick-ups, we get whatever the price is in-store at the time.
