Can someone advise on how this works? I am currently on Fido 3gb LTE data only plan. I only need a new phone and would this deal work for me if I want to get a phone straight up? Sorry for my ignorance.

Go to Walmart or a WOW kiosk. Get the phone you want. Get any plan that qualifies for that specific phone, it doesn't matter since you'll be canceling.
Get the gift card that goes with the phone.
The next day, phone Koodo and cancel the plan.

I don't waste my time with seasonal hold since most reps won't do it.

Encouraging people to cancel right away is akin to killing the goose who lays the golden eggs. The reps don't get a commission most of the time people are successful getting the SH. If the promo is $50 for referral and one does self referral it's definitely money in the pocket. Regular referral and SH breaks even, but keeps you in Koodo's good books so you can repeat this process the next time you see a free phone like the A5. There have been ppl on here who have been blacklisted by Koodo by cancelling the next day.

I just want to let you guys know... the A5 is a phone with good build quality, but there are occasional issues with non-Samsung apps like Gmail. Grace UX is still a heavy UI so sometimes notifications simply don't come up. This happened to me today on my A5 2017 on Nougat (no Oreo update available yet). I missed an important email notification from work, and I use Gmail as my main app. My Redmi Note 4 on LineageOS got the notification 5 hours ago but my A5 never got it. It showed up as a new email when I entered the Gmail app, but no Heads Up notification.

In fact, I missed all notifications, including Play Store update ones. I unoptimized Gmail and a bunch of other apps from the battery optimization settings, and I hope notifications will start showing up properly now. I restarted the phone and they did show up, so there's that. I hope none of you face this issue because it is an extremely frustrating one I've never experienced on any other phone before.

And apparently this is a common issue with the S8 as well.

I almost want to go back to my Note 4. This is a stock A5, unrooted, no bootloader unlock or firmware change, with no stock apps disabled or uninstalled. I just added my accounts and files, and that's it.

How do people do seasonal hold? Rep said you can only do it after 90 says....

I put mine on a week afterwards, but was creative in my reason. Then again, I didn't add 3 phones like some others did.

I don't use GMail except for a single account. The less Google (or Facebook or Verizon/Yahoo) knows about me, the better. TypeApp has been very solid on my A5 for all of my accounts, including GMail.

Eechh... ok. A few weeks ago I bought 3 & cancelled a few hours afterwards & sold them.
So the better strategy would be to:

In store:
1) buy 1, get GC. (& pay the tab now with my cc?)
2) Buy another, refer myself from (1) to get 50$ credit, get 300 gc. (use (1) gc to pay this tab).
3) Buy another, refer myslef from (1) or (2) to get 50$ credit, get 300Gc. (Use (2) gc to pay this tab.)
4) repeat.
5)repeat.

6) ? repeat possible?

7) call koodo & put all on SH, right?
8) sell fones.
9) wait 2 months or so, pay up whats left (the taxes on the phones, activations, etc), & cancel everything.

Right?
