It seems like a good deal when compared to its regular price, but Royal Purple is infamous for shearing to lower weight viscosity. I personally stick to Castrol edge and Pennzoil, which can usually be found for $30.

Shame that they don't have anything heavier, nice deal though. Thanks OP!

As far as the "RP Shearing" thing. That is OLD news and it dates back to the old SL formula in 5W30 weight for the most part. Even then it was vastly overblown by the anti RP folks. One or two incidents became an indictment of the entire product line. No one can tell you if the API 5W40 will shear based on that. I would say it would be no more likely to shear than any off the shelf name brand 5W40 you might try from Mobil 1, Pennzoil, Castrol, etc...

I'd clarify to thicker, but ponder what you'd suggest.

Pennzoil is also on clearance at Walmart for $19 at least 0w20 anyhow. Went looking for this purple stuff and came away with this instead. It looks like they changed their bottle labeling hence the clearance on pennzoil. No more blue label at the top about the “Pureplus technology”.

Nah, it's fine. You're not racing your vehicle I hope. Shearing happens to every oil , some more than others but ultimately it's not an issue unless you're doing extremely long oil change intervals.
