Want to plan an all inclusive to Mexico? Where are the deals?

Looking for some pro advice from the folks.

Planning a get away in March (mid to late, flexible dates). 4 of us, 2 kids (6 and infant). Looking for 4* or higher. Ideally Mexico but open to Dominican Republic as well.

Am told that food sucks at Cuba.

Any ideas on approaches/sites?

Has anyone heard of BookVIP.COM?

SO by your logic one can only get food poisoning in Mexico? You do know that enterotoxigenic E. coli is what most people actually get right and not food poisoning?
Thinking seriously about the 4 S's...Sun, Sand, Surf and ... Booked for Sept in Mexico and booked Samana DR for Jan!

As for BookVIP.com timeshare scam, check for yourself the horrible reviews on tripadvisor.com and make your own conclusions:

Food poisoning..? That's a pretty misguided statement.

Well, between the two of you I think the best is to stay home. Not the case either, there are cases of food poisoning in Canada as well.

Where do people come up with such statements, is it based on isolated incidents, Toronto sun valuable articles, ?

For all inclusive deals I find itravel2000 is a good source.

Sorry, from the reviews, it seems that most people get sick in Cuba.

Why is that?

PS. I have been to Mexico and had an amazing time last time. Just wary of star rankings on trip advisor vs. booking sites

I agree that food in Cuba sucks, but it's not poison ;-)

I think you need to tell us what is important to you, and what do you like to do while on vacation, do you want to go to the same places or rather visit the once you haven't been to, are you going to stay on the resort or venture out, is the budget more important to you or you prefer the best resorts, parties or more quiet and so on.

In Mexico I have been to Rivera Maya and Huatulco, in DR Punta Cana and Samana, all little bit different, and loved all of them ;-)

People always confuse food poisoning with something thats likely due to the result of dehydration, too much alcohol, too much sun, too much food, too much food they're not used to (especially spicy foods), too many coconut milk based drinks (it's a natural laxative)....

It's really hard to compare Mexico to Cuba since the resorts are rated very different. There are just more money in Mexico than in Cuba since Americans could not go to Cuba for the longest time. I would rank a Cuba 5* to be 3-4* in Mexico.

You should look into what sort of activities you wan to do while you're there. If you plan to do alot of excursions, you might want to get a cheaper resort (and spend more money on resort if you plan to stay in the entire time). I've been to both coasts in Mexico and the beaches are much nicer on the east coast (Riviera Maya) is nicer than the west coast. For the food, what you pay is what you get. I went to the Excellence in Riviera Maya for last Christmas and the food was great. Granted, the resort mostly do Ala Carte for food since the buffet isn't open daily.

You only need an all inclusive when your hotel is in the middle of nowhere or the locals haven't figured out the restaurant business (Cuba). If you go to Cancun, there are so many food choices (to suit most budgets), that an all inclusive would be absurd.

I know of 3 people who went to Cuba and got salmonella, myself included. I have to say that in all 3 cases it happened between 10 and 7 years ago, but still.

That sucks...

I always recommend to use common sense (not saying you don't have any, I'm speaking generally) when eating at a buffet, whether on an all-inclusive resort or at a buffet restaurant in Canada. If the breakfast buffet opens at 8am, don't show up at 10:30am after the food has been sitting there in warmers for 2.5hrs. No guarantee those warmers are set to the correct temperatures to prevent food-poisoning. Same goes for lunch, if it starts at 12pm, don't show up at 3pm. Same applies for dinner.

Be safe, stick to the grilled meats too.

Doesn't mean people won't get sick but it lowers the chance.

We go to Cuba every year for the last 12 years, from 3* to 5* - and never, never got sick!
Ate at Cuban restaurants off the resort - never got sick!
If you use common hygiene techniques you will be just fine.

And people should not compare Cuban people to Dominican or Mexicans. It's like comparing apples and oranges. Completely different life approach in these 3 countries.

Food poisoning - I had food poisoning in Toronto, to the point I thought I was going to die! We traveled to Europe - never got sick!

Sometimes it isn't the hotel & cleanliness, sometimes is the nastiness of the other hotel guests.

Cruise ships are notorious for Norovirus. The cruise lines are meticulous with cleanliness and disinfection yet a cruise ship can have an outbreak because other passengers don't wash their hands.

Ask yourself honestly how many times you see others in the public restroom not wash their hands after doing their business? These same people then go the buffet and touch up all the serving utensils.
