[Staples] Warm - Seagate Barracuda 4TB 3.5" SMR Hard Drive $86.99

$86.99 at Staples. Currently $112.46 at Amazon so $25.47 cheaper.

Who is buying 4 TB SMR internal drives in 2021? This is both too small and a mediocre price per GB, for an inferior product.

Why is it inferior and what's wrong with SMR?

CMR vs SMR is irrelevant to most people. That being said, SMR drives should be cheaper per GB as that's the main appeal of the technology. This deal is not good.

This....

If it's not significantly less expensive than a CMR drive, it's a deal for the manufacturer, not the end user.

Only suitable for straight up archive storage where you're going to write once and then stick to reads from that point on.

SMR is straight up inappropriate on a 4TB drive at the 3.5" form factor, and even 6 is pushing it.

Bunch of elitists in here. SMR is fine if your use case doesn't involve a lot of random access writes. Price/TB is pretty good for 2021 with the overall high drive prices everywhere.

SMR is not fine if you're copying over a large amount of data (eg backing up) or using in a NAS.

Yes, the price is ok by the horrible standard of 2021.

Ferland-Et-Boilleau,…
If this is not a good deal, is there any good deal right now for at least 4tb (Nas certified if possible).

I'm updating the family file server.

Some information from Seagate if any one cares:
Seagate issued this statement on April 21: “Seagate confirms that we do not utilize Shingled Magnetic Recording technology (SMR) in any IronWolf or IronWolf Pro drives – our NAS solutions family. Seagate does not market the BarraCuda family of products as being suitable for NAS applications, and does not recommend using BarraCuda drives for NAS applications. Seagate always recommends to use the right drive for the right application.”
