Warning on scheduling Home Depot store pickup

Home Depot will normally hold an item ordered for store pickup for a max of 2 days. but they will let you schedule the pickup up to 6 days later.

I thought that ordering for scheduled pickup would be a good way to reserve an item that's on sale with the stock level dropping so fast that it might be gone by the time I could get over to the HD store on the weekend. But not so - it turns out that the HD store does not process the order until the day of pickup, so if it's out of stock by then, too bad.

I learned this the hard way last year. Now I schedule all my pickups ASAP and make an effort to get them before they're automatically cancelled. Once I couldn't make it out in time but I was able to extend it by calling the store directly. That might be YMMV depending on the store/person you get though.

Total gong show when I arrived at HD to pick up my item as scheduled.

I showed them my Pick Up email, and waited about 5 minutes while they tried to figure out where the item was. Eventually they decided that it must be in their new Customer Pick-Up Locker, an automated locker where you can scan the QR code from your pick up email, and it will automatically open the right door of the locker. Unfortunately none of the staff were very familiar with it, and they couldn't get it to open no matter what they tried. Eventually after about another 20 min. of me listening to their Customer Service phone ringing continuously and never being answered, they gave up and told me to go find another one on the shelf and they would pretend that was the item picked up. Good thing there were still a couple left. I don't know what they'll do if they can't ever get the locker open! :)

Oh boy, I see HD sent me a customer survey link to ask what I think of store pick-up. In fact they sent me two, an hour apart, so I can give them my double-barreled opinion. Face With Tears Of Joy
