water meter inside cabinet

Hello guys,

I have my water meter in the basement, it’s at the corner of a room. Is it ok to put a cabinet and leave the meter inside the cabinet?

Many thanks.

Have definitely seen this done … one guy had finished his basement in the same area
The water meter ended up in a box … that formed a continuation of his counter behind his bar
Pretty slick if you ask me

I would think these days there are less issues than in the past … where the water meter had to be read
That’s a non issue now with the remote outdoor sensors / readers

Also boxed, it protects those pipes that stick out of your floor from getting knocked around

I would tho build in a way for easy access / viewing from time to time
Just to make sure it’s operating as it should

You can GOOGLE for ideas = basement water meter cover

Be prepared to me it accessible for a water meter change if gaskets fail. Don't bury it too heavily.

Agreed, best to have access if required. Removable or access capable should the need arise.

Thanks a lot for the advises. Just want to make sure if there is any code saying it's not permitted to be in a cabinet?

You need to keep easy acces to the meter, the meter does belong to the city or town, they need to come in and if the meter malfunctions they need to replace it.
