Wayfair is NOT worth the hype
The entire experience from beginning to end was unsatisfactory.
To begin, has anyone tried filtering their search so that they don’t have to look through a zillion items to find what they are looking for? When I typed my search criteria in the fields provided, I didn’t actually receive anything that met that criteria. I tried a number of times to filter in various ways, but none of the filtered “matches” actually matched the criteria I typed in. I ended up literally spending hours going through all the items – in this case shelves – just to find an item that came close to what I was looking for. When I eventually found an item that came closest, it was out-of-stock. When I inserted my email address so that Wayfair would notify me when the item would be back in stock, I did not get notified. I had to keep checking their website as to when the item would be re-stocked and that date kept getting pushed forward. In case you’re wondering, I set up the alert to be notified on December 9th, 2021 and I still have not been notified. When I just checked their website, the re-stock date has, yet again, been pushed forward.
Since I got tired of waiting and wanted to purchase a shelving unit before the beginning of the New Year, I decided to look for a different shelving unit. So, once again, I spent hours going through shelves on their website and eventually stumbled upon one that would suffice. I ended up purchasing two shelving units on December 30th, 2021. I received each shelving unit a little more than a week later on two different days.
I ended up using one shelving unit, but not the other so I decided to request a return. When I looked up their return policy, I found out that I had passed the 30-day return window, but thought that I could possibly get a store credit. When I called Wayfair, the customer service representative (CSR) simply reiterated the return policy, which I thought was redundant. Admittedly, I was twenty days passed the 30-day return window, but I pleadingly let her know that the item was unopened and still in its original shipping container – I hadn’t even unsealed the item or removed any stickers. I said I understood that I could not get a refund, but could I, at least, get a store credit? She said that if I was just a couple of days passed the return period, she could make an exception, but could not otherwise.
I read online from a reliable source that Wayfair would give a store credit for an unopened item if it was returned within 90 days of the delivery date. However, this turned out to be false since I was just twenty days passed the 30-day return window, and did not get a store credit.
I was actually annoyed at their lack of consideration because Wayfair’s prices are relatively high as if they have brick-and-mortar stores scattered all across North America, which they don’t. I don’t understand why their prices are so high since everything is basically shipped from a warehouse or from wherever it was made. I naively thought they’d be more accommodating to a first-time customer to encourage repeat business, but that clearly wasn’t the case.
In retrospect, I should’ve looked at the return policy before purchasing. If I did, I wouldn’t have purchased from them in the first place. A measly 30-day return policy for items that have not been opened is just absurd in my opinion. The CSR didn’t even seem compassionate. I believe that the primary purpose of any CSR is to work with the customer so that there is some level of satisfaction at the end of the conversation. However, this CSR seemed like she did not want to work with me.
Going back to the return policy, other companies have longer return policies even if the item is opened. I, on the other hand, did not even open the item and it had been less than two months since the item was delivered to me, and I still wasn’t allowed to return it. If the item was opened, I would understand the push-back. However, I literally had not opened the item or even touched the item since it was delivered. That means, the item is still in sellable condition since it had not been removed from its packaging. All Wayfair literally has to do is slap a new shipping label on top of my shipping label and send it to its new buyer. And, as for the cost of shipping it back, I believe that was covered when I initially bought the item. As I already mentioned, the prices are just unbelievably high so I have to justify that return shipping is included in the purchase price.
I was on the fence when I finished my initial transaction with Wayfair, and even let them know that when I filled out the survey I received after my purchase. Since seeing their return policy and speaking to their CSR, I definitely would not recommend Wayfair at all. Just to let you know, once I realized I was not going to be able to return the product, I filled out their feedback form on their website explaining my case. The response I got back was, once again, a reiteration of their return policy, a suggestion that I sell the item online and a skimpy ten percent discount on my next purchase (which had an expiry date by the way). I just let them know that they could keep their paltry discount since I wouldn’t be shopping with them anymore.
You may be wondering why I purchased from Wayfair in the first place since I mentioned earlier that their prices are high. Well, the pandemic kept me from venturing outside because I live in a high-risk zone, where the virus is rampant. In order to limit my exposure, I explored online furniture sites such as Wayfair, which I thought was a reputable site. You can rest assured, though, that Wayfair is not going to see another dollar from me since this was my first and last time buying from them.
Good riddance, Wayfair.
