Wealthsimple Invest Account Verification

Hi,

I checked the forums and reddit, but couldn't find any relevant information. So I'm making a post here to hopefully find the answer.

I have been using Wealthsimple Invest since 2019 and everything has been fine. I recently had to verify my personal details which was no problem, however I am now required to upload a piece of ID AND a selfie by August 17th (or 20th I forgot) CLICK HERE.

Has anyone else with Wealthsimple Invest had to do this recently (within the last day or so)? I understand the piece of ID, however I think it's ridiculous that I am required to upload a selfie as well.

I am too facing this issue. I did the recertification process twice but still, I am getting this message every time. I contacted the support, they are working on this.

Likewise. I think taking a selfie is a bit too much for verification, but it is the only way to keep the account in order.

Sounds like they want the selfie to match up with the picture on a photo ID you submit.

Why the problem with a selfie? It confirms you are the person submitting the ID. I mean if Tinder requires that surely you can do it for your life savings, no?

I have never used Tinder, and this is the first time I have seen this additional verification requirement. I had the account since 2019 without any problems so I was surprised that they wanted a selfie now. Also, I have investing accounts with banks and Questrade and they did not require a selfie. Like I said, I understand the photo ID but felt like the selfie was a bit too much for verification as goingaround1 said. However, it appears this is the norm now...unfortunate but I guess I will comply.

Thanks everyone! :)

Is this done via third party software company?
Will WS offer any alternatives for reluctant clients?

This seems the norm for many online financial businesses where you don't meet face to face with someone now. Part of know your client requirements to verify you are who you say you are.

So they rejected my driver's licence because it was expired! Good thing for this certification as I had no idea it was expired (didn't get a renewal notice), along with my health card. Did my licence and health card renewal online.

I'll probably use another form of ID to verify my identity while I wait for my new driver's licence.

Yes, it is done via third-party software called Onfido. Unfortunately, I already completed the verification process without considering alternatives...bummer!

I just contacted customer support and there is an alternative, however you will have to verify your information through a Zoom call with an agent.

You probably didn't need to renew it yet:

I think you can back out of the process - I'm not comfortable providing that much information especially since I'm a long time customer.

Just cancel out of the verification, it seems to bring me into my portfolio.

I think they said if you don't verify your identity you will not able to use your account after a certain date. I'm confused why you wouldn't be comfortable providing a selfie that matches your ID? It is a legal requirement for them to know who you are and it's not like it's some unknown company asking you for info.

They don't need my photo to do identification and verification, and the company doing the verification (Onfido) is applying biometrics to the photos without proper disclosure:

I think the courts are allowing the suit to proceed:

I don't think whoever rolled out the solution thought through all the impliciations and did proper disclosure.

Neither of those articles have anything to do with the Wealthsimple verification, in fact they both reference American cases - specifically in Illinois which has a separate law regarding how biometric identification is supposed to work and to the validity of either the lawsuits or the law itself I doubt anyone on this forum has the expertise to comment on.

However, in this country they most assuredly do require the ability to say you are who you say they are. If using a copy of your ID and a photo of you is unacceptable (even though that's exactly how they would do 'in branch' if this was a big 5 FI, except they could just look at you I guess) how exactly do you suggest they do it?
