it's worth noting - 3 yrs warranty on these being red plus, as opposed to 5 yrs on the red pro and the gold ones we got before.

I had two of these busted (platter failures both) at different times.

Both were for backup. And one of them was so big, there was no backup of that backup (because it was for backups in the first place.!) :)

One was under warranty, but it cost great time and money for WD's replacement (Bad experience.) The other was not and it sucked.

Expensive Lesson learnt: Never buy such big ones. Buy multiple smaller ones so that one can keep backup of backups. :)

Past note to self: WD's HDD quality hasn't improved, only gone down, which is a shame. It's Blue SSDs are great though.

It's all subjective. I've owned many different WD drives over the years (HDD and ssd) and only had 1 unexpected failiure in about 20-25 years. These red drives in majority make up my server and have been rock solid. 24/7 for about 12 years now and no failures in under 5 years. I have however experienced several Seagate and 1 samsung drive failures in under a year. While warranty covered then, it's just not worth the risk for me and I don't spend my money there anymore. YMMV.

Man this is tempting, i just purchased 2 8TB for mirror, but it's true the bigger the drive the worst it will be if you don't have a solid recovery plan and if you need to move data from one pool to another.

I think I'll stick to my 8TB disks for now.

In terms of reliability, I've usually buy the cheapest TB/$ drive i could get when i needed an upgrade. Often times it would be an external drive i shucked.

Over the years, it was mostly external segate drives that failed. Most of my drives are now proper WD drives. Just so happens WD internal was cheaper, but they do seem to be much more reliable.

is Seagate Ironwolf Pro better than this one? $335 for 16TB so it's $20.94/TB but it has 5 years warranty

Don't you guys keep the older drives that you backed up? That would be your back ups. I label mine and self them.

It's one step up from the WD Plus. It would equal WD Pro version i think if it has a 5yr warranty.
Up votes, down votes, they're all votes for me! I thank you!

I fell for the same thing.. I believe that is USD pricing. Need to switch to CAD at the top.
