The problem is not the flight itself but more the lodge and the car rental. Plus meals of course. Hawaii is amazing but, crap, it's so expensive.

The layover is not too bad IMO. I looked at one, Montreal to Hawaii. You fly to Vancouver early in the morning, layover 7-8 hours, then fly in the evening to Hawaii.

Great deal.

Where do folks stay? I’ve only been once (Fairmont) and am considering Andaz…not sure if it’s a good area.

Is this for economy I’m guessing?

Also are the rates more than Westjet? Or is google rates cheaper? If buying through Google, can we get points from WestJet?

Wondering if premium economy / business seats are on sale too.

Thanks for sharing. Will look into it. :)

United and AC was selling for around the same price a few months ago with 1 stop usually.
Definitely check the hotel and car rental prices before you book the flights.
I went to Hawaii many times 10-15 years ago when I lived in BC. The same chain hotels i used to pay $100-200 now charge $400-600...
I had a forced layover in Honolulu on the way to Micronesia back in November, and the huge crowd and line ups everywhere at Hilton Hawaiian and Waikiki constantly reminded me why I hate Hawaii these days.
There are many better places to go especially when you are willing to fly that far from Toronto.

My wife is very keen to go to Hawaii just because of the hype.

What can be the alternatives from Toronto?

If going for the “hype”, how about Seychelles or maybe further away Maldives? Both 1 stop from Toronto and no worse than the multi-stop WS flights.

Or if you want pacific, French Polynesia (one stop in SFO).

You can get decent accommodations for all of the above for 200-400 a night, less than Hawaii. If you want high end, they are available too.

Do you have an example of accommodations that are that much cheaper in Maldives? I'd guess that those are likely not worth the distance...

I would agree though, Maldives or FP over Hawaii (based on my experience and preferences)...just not sure it will be cheaper. I haven't been to Seychelles, so I can't compare. F&B prices in Maldives and FP are much higher though.

Bali is a great alternative. Much cheaper than Hawaii. Tons of accommodations, ranging from normal hotel rooms to bamboo villas with private pools overlooking the rice fields and everything in between.
