Gotta be VERY careful with Air BnBs in all of Hawaii. The economy of the state is fuelled by tourism and Air BnB was eating into taxes so the government is really coming down hard on them. There are very specific rules about who can rent out their homes in Hawaii so just because it is listing on the Air BnB website doesnt mean it is legal. Why do you care as a tourist? Well, you dont want to go all the way to Hawaii just to find out the place you were planning to stay has been shut down by the state and then you are going to end up scrambling to find a place to stay. I know it sounds like I am exaggerating but this is totally happening.
I don’t like to stay at Airbnb properties. I’m a hotel person.

We did Oahu, Maui, the big Island and Kauai.

Every airbnb we found on every island had a cleaning fee of almost a days cost so for a stay of 3-4 days the price difference between a hotel and airbnb were negligible, so we went with hotels for the added Hotel perks.
I’m not a fan of Airbnb. I like hotels.

Thanks OP. Just booked 2 tickets from YYZ-HNL return $911. ($455 each), Dec. 8 to 13. Cheaper than going to FL.
Early December is such a fantastic time to go, not a lot of tourists and the weather is (always) just right. The ocean is still warm and the whales are just beginning to migrate back

Check out the Honolulu Holiday lights

and man, you cant miss Santa arriving on the beach in Waikiki by outrigger canoe

One year we watched a small town Christmas parade, it was so much fun

This is super tempting! If they had dates in 2019 I would definitely book it.
I'm in the same boat. Just can't swing more vacation time until next year otherwise I'd book this right now.

Great deal OP

It would be super duper tempting if they had dates where I could be sure the $CDN would be at par.

Big Island is nice, but not a place to spend a week in IMO. One will get bored fast... unless all you want to do is hit the beach I guess, that said it's also one of the least inhabited of the islands for obvious reasons and it's nice and quiet there.
I find the Big Island is not great if you are looking to party but otherwise it is full of stuff to do.

Obviously there is visiting the volcano and the regular sand beaches (like Hapuna )

but...

you can hike down into Waipio Valley or do the stupid thing we did and drive down. I swear I thought I was going to die. The road down is incredible steep and there are car wrecks at the bottom to remind you of how stupid you are to do this but it was amazing once we got down.

There is a great zipline you can do (they have them on all islands actually but if you were looking for something to do on Big Island this is an option)

There is a fantastic Segway tour you can do on the Hilo side, we LOVED this tour

http://segwayhi.com/https://www.zipline.com/bigisland

You can tour working coffee plantations

https://www.gohawaii.com/islands/hawaii ... lantations

and Macadamia nut places (any one going to Big Island - go here, it is incredible and well worth it-grab a bag of mac and head to Spencer beach park not far away)

You can night dive or snorkel with Manta Rays in Kona

There is the Seahorse Farm

http://seahorse.com/

There is the Place of Refuge

I could go on and on, there is so much the Big island offers!

The Ironman runs in Kona on October 13, kind of want to avoid it then as the prices go up for hotels and it is very busy.

Is Hawaii safe to go and is the island damaged due to hurricanes and volcano eruptions?

Would this be a good alternative vacation vs the Caribbean all inclusive especially with young kids under 8?
