What age and time does this child goes to Ontario preschool & kindergarten?

He was born on April 15, 2021.

PRESCHOOL @2.5 yrs old or 30 months = Dec 11, 2023 - Does it mean he starts preschool in Jan 2024 or he has to start in Sept 2024?

KINDERGARTEN @4 yrs old or 44 months = Dec 11, 2024 - Does it mean he starts kindergarten in Jan 2025 or he has to start in Sept 2025?

Thanks.

In Ontario, school year runs Sept to June. Child enters in September of the year the child turns 4. In your case, it would be Sept 2025 since your child will be 4 in 2025. The registration info should be available with your local school board.
Preschool is usually from 30 months. Both kindergarten and preschool are optional in Ontario

Unsure about preschool, but for Kinder, kid can go to school Sept 2024. For some kids it might be a bit early, but will be accepted.

So, you are saying that my child may go to kindergarten early in Sept 2024, because he turns 4 in the calendar year (Dec 2024), and the school admittance regulation is based on a calendar year?

He turns 4 in April 2025 doesn't he? Not 2024.

Yes, he turns 4 in April 2025 ! I must be losing my mind, or gave some of my brain cells to my child. So, he should go to school in Sept 2025.

In Ontario ..

Your Taxes (School Taxes) pay for both Jr Kindergarten and Sr Kindergarten.
JK is designed for 4 year olds
SK is designed for 5 year olds
And GRADE ONE (the only one that is absolutely compulsory … be it in a formal school setting … or home taught etc) is designed for 6 year olds

In Ontario … age of admission is based on the WHOLE Calendar Year
So Grade One is the calendar year your kid turns 6
SK the calendar year your kid turns 5
And JK the calendar year turns 4

Your Kid is April 15, 2021
They will be 6 … on April 15, 2027
So 2027 … September … is the year they are due to enter Grade 1 (they’ll be 6 Years + 4.75 months old at the time ) *

September 2026 … they can start SK
September 2025 .. they can start JK

Other than that … daycares, nursery school, pre school … these are all privately run options
And as such each place can set their own age requirements … and the levels they offer (example Montessori Schools ).

* NOTE … I add the following for info as well. Although the first part doesn’t apply to the OP … who’s child is born in April.

Due to … is also a term that can have a bit of wiggle room to it
As it’s not uncommon for Parents to choose to hold back kids who are born late in the year
(So not 6 at the start of Grade One … but have their Bdays typically October thru December 31st )
This holding back is commonly called “red shirting” = https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redshirting_(academic)

It’s a choice some parents make for their kids born late in the year
Often touted by Parents who CHOOSE not to send their kids to JK or SK in advance of Grade One
In other cases, it’s something the parents have always planned to do … so they delayed started JK & SK as well

The thought behind red shirting is believing an extra year can make a big difference for their kids … giving them time to grow more, develop more etc. And not be the smallest or youngest (baby) in the class. Esp important if the class is over run with first quarter kids born in January, February, and March. Bigger, more self assured kids, almost a year older than the kid born at the end of December.

At any rate … as Education is Provincially run. Grade One is mandated and kids need to be accounted for … this option is something that the Parents need to get approved from the Ministry of Education / School Board in order to make it happen (just like choosing to homeschool must also be approved ).

Truth is education is something that affects every kid & society. It’s a foundation. So be it Nursery School, Preschool, Kindergarten(s), Elementary School, High School, or Post Secondary … it’s important that parents are involved in the process so you get the best FOR YOUR KID. As not every kid is the same … and one size fits most is ok, but it’s not the only alternative. You have to as a Parent be ready to make choices & ADVOCATE for your child’s best outcome. Which isn’t usually achieved by just plunking your kid into a school … and letting “the system” take care of it. You have got to be aware of what’s happening … what’s being taught, how it’s delivered, and how your kid is doing.

Cuz no matter if your kid is a genius, at grade level, or performing below… you got to be prepared to make choices that taps into their full potential … be that by spending one on one time with them on homework, getting a tutor, or in class assistance, etc. So they not only meet milestones in their achievement levels … but they have the opportunity to grow and exceed them for real successes. Best advice as a Parent … STAY INVOLVED.

EXAMPLE…
3 Kids. All different
One had to go to Summer School in High School to keep up (failed courses )
One didn’t go at all … performing at level / as expected
And 3rd did so to get extra credits accrued in advance of the year they’d be attending in September
The thought process for the last child … being able to do more advanced levels in later years … as well as freeing up more time in the actual school year for things like … study time, volunteering, and sports. Lol, yup they’d be our TYPE A over achiever. They were ultra focussed on their life after HS … and what their University Application was gonna reflect

Jk would be Sept 2025

Preschool would be anytime you want to send your kid to daycare. In my case in was based on availability of spots and a waiting list. Most daycares especially the ones that are attached to schools would have availability when the 3-4yr olds are leaving daycare to go to JK, when the toddlers would move up a class and free up spots in the classes with younger kids.

Preschool is essentially similar to daycare in that it runs all year (through the summer). Our son is 27 months and is being moved to preschool next week.

Depends on the Nursery School / PreSchool
They are all privately run
So they are free to structure their programs as they wish

Some Montessori Programs for example
Run just like the regular school year
Nursery School (Toddlers) and PreSchool (3+) September thru June
When kids are signed up to be there every week
Then July & August they run a “camp program”
That’s optional … and you sign up by the week / 2 weeks / or the month

These are the elements that set PRIVATE Education apart from Public Education
Things are similar … but different from the main stream

It shows up early …
If you are parent who opts to put your kids into Montessori Schools
(Private Schools also tend to structure their breaks differently than public too … so more time off typically at Easter / Spring Break, Christmas, Thanksgiving etc. And not always coinciding with what the public sector is doing. Spring & Fall it’s often call Mid Term Break etc )
