What causes the headlights fogging?

Both cars are 2007 and both are the same model.

Blue car is mine and my headlights are clear
Gray car you can see his headlights are messed up.

I always thought it was model based, as some headlights are poorly designed and age causes this, but then I saw this, exact same model and year and this happened.

What makes me wonder the most is that I didn't do anything special to prevent this. Only difference I can think of is environmental? Maybe gray car comes from the east where the weather can cause this? Poor workmanship and when they assembled his car they screwed up with the seals?

My car had the same issue. I used headlight polish to get rid of it. May be give it a shot?

Is the other vehicle washed more frequently and exposed to more sun?
Basically the sealant has come off and the plastic has no protection.

The yellowing is due to the UV coating wearing off, and the plastic turns yellow/hazy. Do you park your car inside or outside?

Try buffing it out with some Meguiars Plastx polish like this:

If that doesn't work, you might need to wet sand and polish.

Could be 1 car is washed more and waxed more so the lights have protection on it.

I got a 2007 vw GTI & I have always put Wax on the headlights to help protect it because they are known to fade like the ones in your photo, to this day they are nice and clear.

I barely wash it once a year or twice. I hardly call it taking very good care. But maybe who knows, the other person didn't wash it at all in the past 13 years? lol

I used cream based toothpaste and it worked not 100% but ~90%.

Hmmm maybe also depending on where you parked, if it was always in the sun vs your car in the shade or garage maybe?

West coast gets very little sunshine compared with other places. Fogging is UV damage. We get 2200 hours of sun/year here. After about year 5, I do mine every year.

I was told that hazing of the headlights can be caused by environmental factors, such as constant exposure to the sun. My car is parked outside and always seems to face the sun, lol. Every couple of years, I'll time it with an oil change and for about $50 I have the dealership buff out the haze.
