What does intermediate level mean?

Hi

I applied for an intermidate level position and the job posting did not say anything about the years of experience required. It just says it an intermediate level position and I have a couple of months of experinces on that position from my co-op work term. Then I recevied an email from the HR recruiter saying they(manger) are likely looking for someone with 3-5years of experience therefore she will not pass my resume to the manager. I thought intermediate level is for people with at least 0-1 years of experience or new graduate. To me 3 to 5 years of experince is way to high for intermeidate level. I think the receuiter is BS*****ing me I like to hear your thought what does intermediate level means to you guys. If the recruiter is BS*****ing me I'm going to file a complaint.

Hello,

Intermediate means between between a junior position and senior managers.

ie; between entry level / 1 years and senior people who have been in the industry for 10 years or so.

Here is my thought:

1. File a complaint with whom? If you believe 0-1 year experience is considered intermediate experience, then what do you consider is an ENTRY level job?

2. To me, 0-1 year is an ENTRY level for position for sure. I don't know about other fields, but for electrical/computer/electronic Engineering, it takes several months of hands on experience just to get familiar with the company's product(s).

3. I don't really see a point in filing a complaint with anyone in your case. You may go back to the recruiter and ask them nicely (with justifications of course) to reconsider their decision rather than complaining.

Good luck

Intemediate does mean more then at least 3-5 years.

What's junior level?

Seeing that you don't know that intermediate level is 3 - 5 years experience ... i think you are too junior :D

Think about it, for arguments sake lets say most people start working around 23 yrs old. Let's also say most people retire around 65 yrs old.

That's >40 years of working experience a person has over a full career period.

You are saying that 0-3 years makes you intermediate, over a >40yr career period?

Personally, I consider people junior until at least 5-7 years of experience has been gained, sometimes more.

What makes you think "intermediate" means 0-1 years of experience? Seriously, do you know what the word means? What do you consider "entry level" then? An 8-year-old kid?

When I was in corporate HR for a bank... these were the listed criteria:
Junior = 0-3 years of job related experience.
Intermediate = 3-7 years of job related experience.
Senior = 5-10 years of job related experience.

Goes back to my point... every graduate these days out of university/college expect to be spoon fed a $50-60K position right out of the gates.

OP...If you only have less than 2 years of experience, then my suggestion to you is wait it out another year or two.. OR perform EXCEPTIONALLY well in your current role so that you get a high performance rating. Then your current boss/manager can make a case for you if you want an intermediate role within your company.

I LoL'd outloud at this. It's funny, cuz it's true. 0-1 years is intermediate, what a maroon...

In my company (and I think it's pretty much the same everywhere):

Junior = 0 - 2 years
Intermediate = 2 - 5 years
Senior = 5+ years

No way in hell 0 -1 years is considered intermediate.

Titles can also be reflective of performance. Our Senior Territory Managers will only achieve this title after meeting performance criteria for x years. Now, the epectation is that you achieve that level....or else, you probably should not have the job...

Intermediate is just an adjective. It can mean anything - there are not clear cut rules for job postings.

You can apply, but you probably won't get an interview.
