What internet speed do I need?

I currently have an internet download speed of Shaw 75, but am considering going to 50 because Shaw does not have a 75 promotion on at the moment. So I can renew at 50 speed, or pay $20 per month extra for a speed of 300. All we really use the internet for in the house is browsing on our smartphones, watching some YouTube videos, streaming music etc. Would Shaw 50 internet speed meet our needs? If we ever decided to stream Netflix, would the 50 still be enough, or is 300 needed for Netflix?

You could get away with 50 if you watch Netflix in 4k on a single screen while browsing on other devices. The streaming rate for Netflix is around 17 Mbps, depending on the series.

Although I pay for 500, speed tests that I've run throughout the day show I usually exceed 500 by a large margin. You may find yourself in the same situation.

Could you please clarify what your last sentence means?

Even though you pay for 50, your actual download speeds may exceed 50 in the same way that I pay for 500 and my download speeds usually exceed 500.

Don't the provider cap it? Which provider are you with?

I'm with Rogers. They should cap it but they never have. I've had 500 Mbps service for almost 2 years. My brother is also on Rogers 150 but often gets over 200.

Non-4k Netflix uses about 7 to 8 Mbps too.

I'm only at 10 and I can stream Netflix on 2 devices simultaneously, stream music, etc. Everything you said you want to do. So 50 would easily get the job done

I've got Start Cable 30 and I have no trouble streaking Netflix 4K while also streaming TSN or or something on a tablet or computer. I have found some buffering if I ever need to have three things going at the same time. It's not bad, but I can get Start DSL 50 for the same price +~$100 one-time fee for installation and modem so I might give that a shot.

Depends on how many ppl in your house hold and simultaneous streams. 50Mbps is fine if you are alone or a couple.

Start 30 is fine for us, 2 kids, 2 adults, iptv, YouTube, phones, Xbox, tablets, Disney+, ooma, no 4k, no issues.
