Manufacturing related?

One of our manufacturing facilities use finger prints to sign in/out, credit payment for lunch, and access authorized areas.

Funny that you are curious.

One of my employers installed this for the employees in the plant, one guy quit and others were paranoid until they found out that the finger print sign in (biometric) are not linked to law enforcement agencies

that could be any jobs that access to sensitive and confidential corporate information in a particular room or building. The RCMP has it.

I saw the fingerprint scanner at dollarrama, I find it strange that a minimum paying job needs finger scan to sign in and out. Maybe the CBSA trying to track illegal refugees that imposes as another person to work?

Our company (manufacturing) uses a palm reader time clock for recording hours. It has absolutely nothing to do with security, it's just a way to ensure that the employee is actually the one timing in and out. You can't leave early and get a buddy to punch your time card after you've left.

I at one point considered having one of these. There's nothing special about it, they're just a slightly higher tech version of a punch card system where you toss your finger down and type in your code to sign in. It stops other people from punching/signing in for you is all it comes down to.

If companies are having issues with people not working proper times, claiming more hours, punching in sooner and not working or having someone else punch in for them to cover if they're late, these things solve that problem pretty easily and they're not tooo expensive.

I had my index finger scanned for punch in/out at a nightclub.

When I used to work at the airport, going into sensitive areas required either a fingerprint scan or an iris scan.

There is common misconception with these systems that they store your fingerprint and can share it with law enforcement.

Here is my understanding:

These systems use a one-time image of your finger print (or iris) and, using an algorithm, create a unique number based on your unique fingerprint.

When you present your finger to the reader, an algorithm generates the number and if the number matches an entry in a database, access is granted.

Biometric data simply can't be ported from the system to be employed in some nefarious way.
I've discovered the Add to Ignore List feature and now my RFD Forums experience is immeasurably better.

Law firm.

President suspected workers, the lawyers, were not working as many hours as they stated in time sheets.

I think fingerprint is good idea if its not used by CBSA to hunt down illegal people.

Fingerprint is good because co-workers always ask me to swipe for them, they make excuses of "I have to go to bank" (to leave early), and not actually doing that. Now they can't do that at all.
