What Was the Last Game You Bought and Did You Enjoy It?

With the Steam sale going full swing and about a month of deals courtesy of the E3 season I imagine everybody added something to their backlogs. Post your most recent purchase, and tell us whether or not you enjoyed it and why? Be nice to get some recommendations out of it, honestly.

Mine: Bought Warhammer 40k Inquisitor at 75% off despite never having heard of it before. Came up on recommendations for isometric looting ARPGs and always held a soft spot for the 40k universe and its exaggerated designs. Turns out what I got was a badly optimised but very, very fun game that plays like Diablo and looks like Starcraft. Combat feels good and chunky, and there's just something to be said about rolling with shotgun blasts rather than throwing magic in ARPGs (probably due to the lack of sci-fi themed games in the genre). Lots and lots of stuff to do as well with the new season coming in next week. The amount of stuff to grind for is up there with Destiny but thus far if you grab the complete edition there aren't any micropayment BS. Map based games means it's easy to jump in, clear a map and then do something else. They are adding Void Co-op soon, which from what I know is basically raids. Interface is a mess though, and sorting through stuff isn't as easy/satisfying as it should be.

All in all, considering the price - will recommend at 75% off. Steam sale still has a week to go, so if you're interested, definitely take a look.

Now, what was your most recent purchase, and would you recommend it? Don't be shy. At this point I've pretty much accepted my backlog isn't getting any smaller, and will have to live with being a hoarder.

I made a few purchases during the steam sale as well as during the epic coupon sale earlier last month. I recently got the Quest 2 during its sale and for that I got Skyrim VR for $20 and The Ultimate VR Comedy Bundle for $56ish. Of that I've only played skyrim and in the bundle only tried Rick and Morty Virtual Rickality. The latter is a fun and amusing game if you enjoy the TV show but really short. I think I finished it in about an hour of play. If I didn't get it deeply discounted I would feel very ripped off. Two other games from that bundle are co-created by the same show maker so I know the humour will be great and entertaining, reviews are excellent as well. Skyrim looks and plays great I would recommend it if you have a VR headset. Many say it is a must to mod the game buy I am enjoying it as it came.

I really hate buying games now as I also have a huge catalog of games that sit un-played. I've also been getting the free games from epic and there are lots of quality games in there I haven't touched either. TBH If I never bought another game I would still have plenty currently to last me a lifetime.

LEGO City Undercover - Picked this up for $6 from Fanatical in early May but I'd also recommend it at the current Steam sale price of $7.49. Best Lego game ever made imo, genuinely great writing and straight forward fun gameplay that's never stressful with a great 15-20 hour long single player campaign.

American Truck Simulator Colorado, Heavy Cargo and Special Transport DLCs - Spent about $12 all together on these add ons. ATS is one of my favorite chill out games to play while listening to a podcast or new music, always got my monies worth out of the previous DLCs and so far these are no exception. The special transport missions are a refreshing and challenging change from the regular content.

Shadow Of The Tomb Raider - This never came to Game Pass on PC and after enjoying a recent replay of Rise, I decided to just pay the $18 for the "Definitive Edition" on the current Steam sale since it was close to the historical low anyway and comes with all the DLC. I'm about 8 hours in and I think it's worth it. Amazing graphics, more appealing environments than Rise and seems like more actual "Tomb Raiding".

This thread just made me realize I've spent a grand total of $37 on games so far in 2021 including the $1 I recently paid for another 3 months of Game Pass Ultimate Smiling Face With Sunglasses

MLB The Show 21 Jackie Robinson Digital Edition PO for $130. Putting in a ton of hours in DD Ranked mode but also super frustrating with lag and cheese from opponents.

Did I enjoy the last game I bought?

No. The question implies that I actually played the last game I bought.

The last game I bought will sit in my Steam backlog for about 5 years. Then a few months after I finally get around to playing it, it will be offered for free.

Final Fantasy Intermission DLC. Price for DLC was a little steep, but I enjoyed it.

Last game I bought I felt I didn't enjoy much was NFS Hot Pursuit Remastered. I liked it back in 2010, but wasn't feeling it in 2021.

I finished Days Gone and felt like another semi open world game. For some reason Mad Max came to mind and I was surprised to see it in my library. Think it was a PS+ title at some point. While I did not directly pay for it I do pay for PS+. I am enjoying it so far and have about 20 hours in. I feel it is a very underrated game. Unfortunately the PS version does not have the FPS boost so I believe it plays @ 30. Combat and car mechanics are really good and its quite fun to upgrade both Max and the Magnus Opus though out the game. Story missions are pretty good but there is a fair bit of grinding during the first 8-10 hours I found. I would recommend it if you like the movie and post apocalyptic games.

Last game I bought was COD Black Ops Cold War, and along with Warzone, it's my most played game this far this year. I still liked Modern Warfare a bit better but COD has been on a tear these last two years...

I love this series. It's one of those underrated JRPG.

I am enjoying Man-eater right now but it was a PS+ game so not technically purchased but not technically free either. As for actual last played purchased game would be It Takes Two. Some parts of the story are off-putting, but the game is very fun.

Tetris Effect. I wanted a relaxing game to play in the evenings before going to be. It's not relaxing at all. And while I originally thought I was good at Tetris I've since realized I'm just average to bad. I average a "C" score and have only gotten "S" once. Still a great game.

Spelunky 2. Derek Yu's game design philosophy is that sequels should be extensions of the original game. Spelunky 2 does that and adds many quality of life improvements especially to the HUD. I've purposely stayed away from the game guides to try to figure out the secrets myself.

Hotshot Racing fulfills the Virtua Racing nostalgia. You can finish the game in just over an hour and the replayability is in trying to place 1st in every race.

Final Fantasy 12 The Zodiac Age. If you can get past the low framerates of Final Fantasy games from the Playstation 2 generation and older then you can remember (or realize) that the old FF games are really good.

I just picked up Resident Evil 2 in the recent Xbox Sale for 15$ (after waiting forever for it to go into gamepass) and have been in enjoying it quite a bit.
Obviously the graphics are leaps and bounds better but it's the gameplay in that game really stands out and it really has stood the test of time.
It's so much better than the third person co-op shooters that the later games in the series became and I'm really glad they returned to the well with the latest two iterations.

Prior to that the last game I purchased (for myself) was Star Wars: Jedi Fallen order and I enjoyed it immensely and can't wait for a sequel.

Resident Evil 2 remake has many refinements and tweaks to the gameplay that it is nothing like the original game mechanically. The story has also been overhauled too.

The original PS1 game had tank controls, and you could not accurately aim your shots with any precision, or move smoothly. RE2 Remake is probably the best game in the series, aside from maybe Resident Evil 4
or when RE4 gets a remake.

A warning that RE3 remake was made by the B-team and nowhere near as good as 2 Remake.

I recently bought Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart, NieR Replicant, MLB The Show 21, Mario Golf Super Rush, and Mass Effect Legendary Edition.

The last games I bought and did not like were Control on PS4, Team Sonic Racing, and Crash Team Racing Nitro Refueled. I did not like the later two mainly because Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is so much better than Sonic Tag Team Racing and Crash Team Racing. I also did not like Control Ultimate Edition on PS5 which was given free on PS+.

On the other side of the scales:

Horizon: Zero Dawn was by far my most disappointment recent purchase. PC version on GOG, went into it without even waiting for a big discount because I had heard so many good things about it. Turned out what I got was a B-grade YA novel plot and gameplay that is best summarised as Assassin's Creed: Future Robot Dinosaurs. Aloy went from outcast nobody likes to hero of the land in two story beats, plus the whole 'every named dude falls in love with her' thing was laughably stupid and worthy of mary-sue ridicule.

The rest of the story essentially becomes a Silicon Valley/IT circle jerk. IE, how I imagine tech nerds imagine the rest of the world sees them. The scene with the found footage of the head techies was at least as cringe-inducing as anything in Borderlands 3 (the fact that one of them literally refers to themselves as 'alphas' which happens also to be their given moniker is just... can't even muster a laugh for that). I think the game fully lost me at 'trillionaire is finally convinced to fund program to save all organic life on earth'. FUND. Game says it with a straight face. Uh, literal end of life on earth so... a) wtf is he planning to do with all his trillions once earth is stripped bare? and b) why would 'payment' still be an issue by that point?

Didn't help that the final boss was literally dragged into the scene as a metal ball that slightly glows. I burst out laughing there. That's not getting into the boring sidequests/Mass Effect style dialogue trees and the level gating on par with the worst of what the RPG Assassin's Creeds did. Lost all interest in the upcoming Forbidden West afterwards. $40 could have been better spent on lottery tickets.

lmao that's such a perfect description of it and I've always described it to people as a poor mans Witcher 3 featuring robot dinosaurs. I really struggled with the first 15-20 hours of this game as well but I did think it improved greatly in the second half when it got more into the bigger picture of the world. I didn't think it was bad but nowhere near the "GOTY" masterpiece people were making it out to be back then and for me it's the epitome of an overrated game just because of being a "Sony Exclusive". It's a solid 7.5/10 game imo, I never felt like playing the DLC after and I'm not sure I'll care if I never play the sequel either.

Oh wow, not liking a critically acclaimed game, so rebellious Smiling Face With Open Mouth And Tightly-closed Eyes

It shouldn't be news that not all Sony exclusives are for everyone. My own guilty admission is I don't actually like The Last Of Us. I played the remake but kind of quit on it. Game is kind of boring, AI is very stupid, gunplay really sucks, story and character development seems alright but not interesting enough to keep me playing. Actually, Joel is a bit if a jerk, I get he's probably like that because of his daughter but like, whatever, seems like everyone is having a rough go in the game's climate? I may revisit it eventually, but I think it will end up feeling like a chore.
Oh and I've never played HZD. Wife and daughter loved it, but the robot dinosaur thing had me scratching my head a bit from the onset. If I was 9 I might find that cooler. Maybe I will play it some day and change my mind.

EDIT Can I say this theme of guilty game confessions/unliked masterpieces would make for a more interesting thread

Wow Face With Tears Of Joy

If I don't like a game after the first couple of hours, I'm done with it. No game is worth struggling that long just in the hope that it gets better 20 hours later to redeem itself. Props to you for that kind of patience. I need to be impressed early on to even continue playing a game.
