What are the latest rules and reqs for US/CAN land border (i.e. road trip?)

Just trying to get the latest idea of what's needed to enter the US by road (as a Canadian) and what I need to return.

Looking to get the latest on specific accepted testing on both ends. Assuming fully vaccinated.

No test requirement to enter the US by land. Must be fully vaccinated and able to provide proof if requested. Entry by air requires antigen test result maximum 1 calendar day before flight departure.

To return to Canada, must use ArriveCan app prior to arrival, upload proof of vaccination, and present a molecular test result taken outside of Canada maximum 72 hours before arrival or antigen test result taken outside of Canada maximum 1 calendar day before arrival. Test can be done by a pharmacy, laboratory, or telemedicine. Quarantine restrictions apply if unvaccinated or if other entry requirements are not met.

Thank you.

Accepted types of tests
Molecular tests
PCR - Polymerase chain reaction
Nucleic acid test (NAT) or Nucleic acid amplification test (NAATs)
Reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP)

I believe someone said NAAT is the cheapest/free-est one you can get from like a Walgreens same day.

Depends on the region, Walgreens offers different tests in different states, but yes, NAAT is fairly rapid (results in a couple of hours). Big thread on that in the travel forum.

In some locations you can get a Rapid Antigen Test, which is even quicker, but that one is only good for the 1 calendar day before vs 72 hours for the NAAT.

One more thing to add.. If u have documented proof of a positive covid test.. u can re enter Canada for up to 180 days 10 days after testing positive
I am going to use my positive test this weekend for a day trip to the states
The free tests that u get in bc from the local Heath department do not qualify.. I went and paid for a test

So the free Pcr test that was given by the provincial govt can not be used for a previous positive test? My son got COVID and I was planning on using that test to bring him back. If not, then I’ll need to book an antigen test to get him back into Canada.

There was wording on the Canadian government site that stated what all the test had to have on it as in lab name adreess.. My provincial test didn't ha ve all that . I can't seem to find it now on the government of Canada site.. Just says u need a positive pcr test and u can enter 10 days after test

Edit.... I just filled out my arrive can app and all it asks is if I have a postive test and to bring it with me... Doesnt say I need all the other crap I read before...
They have changed the wording on the canadian site... I scrolled through my texts and found a screen shot I had sent to a friend that was travelling... I then clicked on the link I sent him and it doesnt say anything about lab address and all the other garbage they wanted..... I guess they figured if it was a provincial test it was good enough...

They did change their wording from before. But a provincial health document should be sufficient. The only thing is it doesn't show the whole name and blocks part of the health card number I guess for privacy reasons.but with the health card in hand, you can Peice the id who its for.

A question for you (thanks so much in advance):

So If I'm understanding right, no test to enter USA by car (which is great) but I'm confused about coming back. I plan on seeing a Sabres game and coming back same day. I can't take a test at Shoppers Drug Mart at 9AM and use that when I come back 10PM? I need to scramble in Buffalo to do a test there?

You don't need any covid test to enter the US by land as long as you're fully vax'd, but you'll need some covid test to drive back to Canada.

Only the stupid Trudeau gov't insists on punishing Canadians with those scientifically useless covid tests on day trips.

That's good to know, but provincial PCR tests stopped back in December, IIRC. I couldn't get one in January when I got sick, they would only give me a take-home rapid self-test.I had to pay a clinic $149 for a PCR test.

Right

There was a short trip exemption for a short time in December, but in their infinite wisdom Trudeau and Co haven't brought it back

I had a PCR test in BC in Feb..the day I went for testing there were 12 people in line for pcr testing.. Separate lines for pcr and rapid tests.. The rapid tests were just being handed out from a basket.. They are still available.. During the craze in December they limited pcr testing to the elderly and those with underlying health issues
I should have stated it does need to be a positive pcr to re enter Canada after 10 days from test date
Its good for 180 days from the test date
