What Is Ticketmaster Talking About? Cancelled Events Not Getting Refunds

So here's a new low for Ticketmaster ...

They are claiming that cancelled events are "postponed" until the event organizer cancels and offers a refund.

I've been buying tickets through TM for YEARS. This has never been the case. When concerts or events are cancelled on the date you have purchased, you are given THE OPTION to hold onto your tickets for the new date (not likely announced yet) or you can receive a refund.

Why would you be forced to hold onto your tickets? Your tickets are for an event in a certain city on a certain date. I've travelled to cities before for concerts. If it is cancelled, I'm not planning to come back months, possibly a year later. Are you nuts?

This policy isn't right and something needs to be done about this. Government intervention, here we go again.

You made a purchase for a DATE and TIME.
When it is not honoured, you get a FULL REFUND

Stop trying to pull a fast one Ticketmaster!

You, the purchaser, can't stand for this. This is just wrong.

It’s to stem the HEMORRHAGE no doubt

Can you imagine how much money GREEDY Ticketmaster has lost in the last 30 days alone

With every concert & sporting event CANCELLED the world over

And no real end in sight

Greedy that they are ... they are just planning to hold onto as much CA$H as they can

And well ... that’s your & my dollars for now non existent events we hold tickets to

And ya it’s bad, and it’s wrong

More so if it’s an event you booked to go with an out of town getaway or vacation
(Ours is this Summer in the USA ... cannot imagine going there anytime soon ... even AFTER the border reopens )

I’m on the same boat. Chatted with TM support today. Dead end. They’re not offering anything for postponed shows atm. I have about 6 shows that are either rescheduled or postponed.

Indefinitely postponed, lol. That's kinda what you get for making a deal with the devil.

Yup

Prob now tho is many times it’s the ONLY option
As Ticketmaster is who everyone sells thru (Sporting Events)
Or it’s affiliate Live Nation (Concerts etc)

Which sucks

I much prefer the old days when venues maintained their own box offices

Yup, just have to avoid big concerts. I would think a credit card charge back would be in order, since you didn't get what you paid for based on their original terms.

Man, to hell with Ticketmaster. One thing I learned in recent years is to just roll the dice on an event and look for retail price tickets a week or so before. It sucks and is unpredictable.

I hate giving them money upfront for events that are 6-8 months in the future.

My Assassin's Creed Symphony got postponed. $120. Can't imagine how much money they hoarded for summer shows in February and early March.

Yup they've been holding my $600 hostage for hockey tickets because the NHL "may reschedule the regular season." Equally pissed off at Bettman and all the other League reps who won't come out and admit nothing's coming back until Fall. Until the event goes from postponed to cancelled, no refunds for anyone.

In the same boat. It's ridiculous that they get away with stuff like this

From the article you linked: Balance sheet update: "Live Nation's total cash and cash equivalents balance was $3.3B as of February 29, which included $914M of free cash and $2B of event-related deferred revenue.

That 2 billion is all the expected revenue from the promotion of "postponed" concerts and the withheld refunds on tickets sold. So they are using the money from withheld refunds to pad their balance sheet / prop up their stock /calm nervous investors.......... The stock should be at $5 AND the CEO should be put in jail.

I laughed at the bolded part of this quote from Live Nation CEO Joe Berchtold (Ticketmaster is a Live Nation subsidiary) speaking about the refund timeline:

“I think there’s a lot of misperception about Ticketmaster,” Berchtold opined. “Ticketmaster doesn’t sell these tickets and then sit on a mountain of cash. Ticketmaster sells tickets, then it gives the cash over to the venues where the events are being held, the venues will either hold the cash, give it to the event organizer, maybe eventually to an artist.”

Exact same situation at our house about NHL tickets. And if they do not cancel and decide to reschedule it will be another mess trying to get a refund for a postponed event that you can not make the date, or if you are not willing to travel into the large crowd.

I used to work for MLSE so I have some insight. Prices are set by the promoter. They are also the ones that decide if events get cancelled. I remember when they had the G20 in Toronto and riots were going around, the promoter didn't cancel the event until a couple of hours before the show. I can't remember which concert it was exactly... It was either Andre Rieu or Andrea Bocelli. Concert goers basically walked up to the ACC and stood outside as the doors were locked and people weren't being let in. When they are given direction by the promoter, they will issue refunds if shows are not rescheduled. What usually happens is they do not reissue tickets when the event gets rescheduled. They just have ticket holders use the original tickets for the new date.

Hey this sounds like how the cruise lines can't/won't offer refunds because they literally don't have enough actual money to.

No money left when you pay executives large bonuses and buy back stocks instead of saving/investing it.

Being short on cash, I wanted my postponed event to be refunded. How do we get the government to step in? This would be a great way to out some cash back in the pockets of Canadians.
