As previously mentioned, the value of any stock could drop, irrespective of whether or not it pays dividends. Volatility is par for the course in investing. You can think of volatility as the "cost" for holding risk assets. Assets that are less volatile - GICs, cash, etc - typically have lower prospective returns.itemsale2003 wrote: ↑ So how do you guys keep track of the fact that while you are getting dividends, the value of the stock "could" drop. Or do you just sell when the stock drops so capital is protected?
Typically I don't sell when my positions decline. If there is a large decline (like 30+%) I will re-evaluate my positions and check to ensure I didn't miss something, but assuming I still believe in the underlying prospects of the business if the value proposition is attractive I will add more.
Keep calm and go long

4 percent average between accounts (some accounts pure passive, some dividends, some mixed) - that's not yield on cost.
While income/salary coming in, large drops mean picking and choosing what to add - depends if it is a full market / sector drop or individual company dropping.

am i right in assuming most dividends top out around 6-7% distribution yield? so for most people, every $10k invested should net you about $50/month. someone making $1000/month would need to have about 200k invested.

If you have RRSP long time, that 1000 is possible.
Only 200/month in TFSA for me.

I think 6-7% is a bit on the high side but I think you could get pretty decent Canadian portfolio that has a 5% yield.
I had two paper portfolios for high yield (one with a 6% and one with an 8% yield). They've under performed pretty badly during Covid with multiple dividend cuts.

I'm roughly 4% yield for the taxable portfolio, but I'm also in a number of Canadian sectors that aren't noted for their higher yields. Consumer discretionary, consumer staples and industrials.

Unless you are retiring in 3 years, I don't get why you would even want dividend income.
Personally it is such a hassle ($150 per company here and there. I would much rather they buyback their own shares rather than me having to re-invest my dividends)
Some of my best performing stocks (Netflix, Amazon, etc) ($1,000 invested worth $10,000 right now) actually pay $0 dividends.
Some of my worst performing stocks (Cineplex, Ford) pay out very high dividends. I am actually sitting on big capital losses even when taking into account the dividends they have paid out. (e.g. $1000 worth $800)

Where do you get started buying individual dividend funds ? Have an index one fund one but it’s getting currently obliterated
