What's this on my tree?

What's this on my tree? Insect eggs? How can I get it off safely? I tried to touch one of the "shells" and it just fell off with white powdery like stuff under neither.

I don't know what kind of tree it is, bought a house and it was here. But there is a lot of that stuff on it, and not on the neighbouring trees. They fall off with just a light touch, so they don't appear to be part of the tree. All the white stuff you see probally had a brown "shell" over top of it but got knocked down by rain or wind. During the summer last year, seemingly every bee and wasp in the neighbourhood was practically living in this tree.

Magnolia Scale...it will slowly kill your Magnolia over the next 2-3 years. Want to fix it? Hire an arborist now (before it leafs out) to spray it with dormant oil. It's a light clean mineral oil that suffocates the scale and is a common treatment for orchard trees. Because it's non-toxic, it's also permitted under Ontario's pesticide law.

That looks really bad. My magnolia got scale for the first time last summer. I noticed it because there was tons of bees around the branches- they are attracted to the tree puss that is secreted to defend itself. I got 2 consecutive treatments by an arborist last fall ($$) so hopefully it will be better this year!

Is this a city owned tree? Call them to have them inspect it.

You can try spraying it with Neem oil yourself.
